2 Page | www.stagthas.org Dear brothers and sisters of St. Agatha, did you notice today
how clean the church was? If you are reading this bulletin in your pew, look up and see the reredos (the large wooden altarpiece behind the altar; retablo in Spanish) and the walls. Then look down and examine the carpet and the wooden floor. All of them were cleaned this past week by many of our volunteers. Three different groups divided the labor and gladly took on the responsibility of making our worship space more welcoming. I thank all the volunteers who had bright smile on their faces all throughout the hours they spent cleaning the church. I thank Joe Galvan, Ivan Escalante and Blanca Oviedo for spearheading the project, and for organizing the multifaceted work. I noticed how three days of simple cleaning could make a huge difference in the church environment. I look forward to continuing the efforts of updating and beautifying our worship space in the future. I have been moved by all of you who give generous- ly to those efforts, because you consider this church your home.
This coming week, the Church celebrates All Saints Day and All Souls Day, when we participate in the communion of saints and commemorate deceased members of our fami- lies. Many members of our parish have the tradition of "Dia
de los Muertos," when they set up an altar at home, onwhich they place special bread (pan de muerto), flowers (cempazuchitl), photos of the deceased, their favorite food, and other decorations. We also have the festivity of Hallow- een which I know many of you (especially children) look forward to, and some others merely tolerate or even boy- cott. It is true that part of our contemporary way of viewing Halloween is devoid of truly Christian content. However, that does not mean that we should distance ourselves from it. Halloween means "All Hallows Eve", a festive precursor to the celebration of All Saints Day. It is older than All Saints Day, but the Church made it completely its own.
On those three days and in the month of November, we re- mind ourselves that this world is not all that there is, and that those who have gone before us continue to love us and can interact with us through prayers. What a beautiful reminder it is.
Beginning on Thursday and throughout November, we will keep a Book of Remembrance in the church. I invite you to put the names of your beloved deceased there, so that we can pray for them together. I pray that you have a blessed week.
‑‑ Father Anthony
