GOOD NEWS REFLECTION: HOW TO TOUCH THE HEM OF JESUS' GARMENT

Wouldn't it be great if we could actually touch and feel the hem of Jesus' clothing, like the woman in this Sunday's Gospel reading? To be near enough to Jesus to be healed spiritually, physically, and emotionally. How can we, more than 2000 years after he ascended to heaven, get so close to him? It is possible, and it's exactly what Jesus wants. It comes from developing a better understanding of who Jesus really is and how much God really cares about us. The synagogue leader understood, which is why he could say: "Please, come lay your hands on my daughter that she may live." He understood Jesus beyond what was in front of his eyes. He believed in the divine life of Jesus. Knowing Jesus is to know divine life, which transforms our earthly life into something much more like his and then takes us to heaven. The first reading, remember, states clearly that death is not part of God's plan. Jesus drives this point home by allowing the girl to die before he reaches her house. Certainly, God could have kept her alive until he got there! But he wanted to show the world that he could restore life and that he has the power to rescue us from death. If we fear death, we do not recognize the nearness of Christ. We can touch the hem of his garment, but we do not see it, and so we do not believe it. In this case, we are like the mourners that Jesus had to chase out of the house before working his miracle. If we fear that our trials are leading to disastrous

conclusions, we have forgotten how powerful Jesus is, and we've forgotten that he cares enough to rescue us. We need to move ourselves closer to Jesus. We have to press on through the crowd of distractions and doubts, with our eyes fixed only on Jesus and our hands reaching out to him in prayer. If we fear that God does not care enough to help us, we need to spend more time learning why Jesus gave up his life for us and why the Father sent him to us. Do you believe that Jesus wants to work miraculously in your life? How has the disbelief of the people around you infected your thinking and reduced your faith? Describe a miracle that you saw or experienced. How long did it take? What blessings occurred during the time of suffering? Most of us own more than we realize. But no matter the size of an estate, if you want to provide for your surviving relatives and others, you need to have a will. If you die without making a will, you lose the ability to control the disposition of your assets. The law of the state will tell your family where your money and property go. Your bequest can be a specific amount of money, property or stock. Naming our Parish as a charitable beneficiary is simple; to make a gift, simply include the following words in your will: “I give, devise and bequeath to St. Peter & St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church of Haverstraw (write in the amount) to be used for the needs of the Church.”

GOOD NEWS REFLECTION: CÓMO TOCAR EL BORDE DEL MANTO DE JESÚS

¿No sería grandioso si pudiéramos realmente tocar y sentir el borde del manto de Jesús, como la mujer en la lectura del Evangelio de este domingo, para estar lo suficientemente cerca de Jesús y ser sanados espiritual, física y

emocionalmente? ¿Cómo podemos nosotros, más de 2000

años después de que ascendió al cielo, estar tan cerca de Él? Es posible y es exactamente lo que Jesús desea. Es el resultado de desarrollar una mejor comprensión de quién es Jesús realmente y cuánto se preocupa realmente Dios por nosotros. El líder de la sinagoga comprendió, por eso pudo decir: "Por favor, pon tus manos sobre mi hija y vivirá". Él entendió a Jesús más allá de lo que estaba frente a sus ojos. Él creyó en la vida divina de Jesús. Conocer a Jesús es conocer la vida divina, la cual transforma nuestra vida terrenal en algo mucho más parecida a la de Él y así nos lleva al cielo.

La primera lectura, recuerda, establece claramente que la muerte no es parte del plan de Dios. Jesús lleva este tema hasta el extremo, permitiendo que la niña muera antes de llegar a su casa. ¡Por supuesto, Dios podría haberla mantenido con vida hasta que Él llegara allí! Pero quería mostrarle al mundo que Él podía devolver la vida y que tiene el poder de rescatarnos de la muerte. Si tememos a la muerte, no reconocemos la cercanía de Cristo. Podemos tocar el borde de su manto, pero no verlo, y entonces no lo creemos.

En este caso, somos como los familiares de la niña que Jesús tuvo que sacar de la casa antes de hacer el milagro. Si tememos que nuestras pruebas nos estén conduciendo a finales desastrosos, nos hemos olvidado qué poderoso es Jesús, y nos hemos olvidado que Él se preocupa lo suficiente como para rescatarnos. Debemos acercarnos más a Jesús. Debemos pasar entre la multitud de distracciones y dudas, con nuestros ojos fijos sólo en Jesús y con nuestras manos extendidas hacia Él en oración. Si tememos que Dios no se preocupe lo suficiente como para ayudarnos, necesitamos pasar más tiempo aprendiendo por qué Jesús entregó su vida por nosotros y por qué el Padre nos lo envió. ¿Crees que Jesús quiere obrar milagrosamente en tu vida? ¿Cómo puede infectar tu pensamiento y reducir tu fe la incredulidad de las personas que te rodean? Describe un milagro que hayas visto o experimentado. ¿Cuánto tiempo llevó? ¿Cuántas bendiciones ocurrieron durante el tiempo de sufrimiento? ¿Cómo fue todo esto una expresión del amor de

CUANDO HAGA SU TESTAMENTO, FAVOR DE RECORDAR A SU PARROQUIA

La mayoría de nosotros poseemos más de lo que pensamos. Pero, no importan el tamaño de nuestras posiciones, si usted quiere proveer para sus parientes que le sobreviven y para otros, usted necesita tener un testamento. Si usted fallece sin tener un testamento, usted pierde la habilidad de controlar como será distribuida sus propiedades. La ley del estado les dirá a sus familiares a donde irán sus bienes y su dinero. Su legado puede ser una cantidad de dinero específica, propiedades, o inversiones. SECOND VATICAN COUNCIL: USE OF LATIN LANGUAGE

Full, conscious, and active participation of the people is essential in the Church’s worship and prayer. With this goal the Second Vatican Council allowed the Church to celebrate Mass in the languages of the people in particular nations and places. Latin had a special place, but where local languages made active, full participation more possible, use of the local (vernacular) languages was encouraged. “Particular law remaining in force, the use of the Latin language is to be preserved in the Latin rites. But since the use of the mother tongue, whether in the Mass, the administration of the

sacraments, or other parts of the liturgy, frequently may be of great advantage to the people, the limits of its employment may be extended. This will apply in the first place to the readings and directives, and to some of the prayers and chants, according to the regulations on this matter to be laid down separately in subsequent chapters. These norms being observed, it is for the competent territorial ecclesiastical authority… to decide whether, and to what extent, the vernacular language is to be used; their decrees are to be approved, that is, confirmed, by the Apostolic See. And, whenever it seems to be called for, this authority is to consult with bishops of neighboring regions which have the same language. Translations from the Latin text into the mother tongue intended for use in the liturgy must be approved by the competent territorial ecclesiastical authority mentioned above. In Masses which are

celebrated with the people, a suitable place may be allotted to their mother tongue. This is to apply in the first place to the readings and "the common prayer," but also, as local conditions may warrant, to those parts which pertain to the people…Nevertheless steps should be taken so that the faithful may also be able to say or to sing together in Latin those parts of the Ordinary of the Mass which pertain to them.

And wherever a more extended use of the mother tongue within the Mass appears desirable, the regulation laid down in Art. 40 of this Constitution is to be observed.

Fr. Martin Bilson is a priest from the Diocese of Techiman, Ghana, West Africa. He is the Rector of the minor seminary of his diocese. Fr. Martin was ordained to the priesthood twelve years ago and served in parish work before working in the seminary. We give him a warm welcome to St. Peter and St. Mary Church, and we ask God to bless Fr. Martin during his stay with us.

This necessary cleaning and tuning work will require three weeks: two weeks for the cleaning and one week for tuning. During these weeks we will celebrate daily Masses in our parish hall underneath the church. Weekend Masses on

Saturday and Sunday we will continue to celebrate in our church.

LENGUAJE LATINO

Permaneciendo en vigor una ley particular, el uso de la lengua latina debe conservarse en los ritos latinos. Pero dado que el uso de la lengua maternal ya sea en la Misa, la administración de los sacramentos u otras partes de la liturgia, con frecuencia puede ser de gran ventaja para la gente, los límites de su empleo pueden extenderse. Esto se aplicará en primer lugar a las lecturas y se conservará el uso de la lengua latina en los ritos latinos, salvo derecho particular.

Sin embargo, como el uso de la lengua vulgar es muy útil para el pueblo en no pocas ocasiones, tanto en la Misa como en la administración de los Sacramentos y en otras partes de la Liturgia, se le podrá dar mayor cabida, ante todo, en las lecturas y moniciones, en algunas oraciones y cantos, conforme a las normas que acerca de esta materia se establecen para cada caso en los capítulos siguientes. Supuesto el cumplimiento de estas normas, será de incumbencia de la competente autoridad eclesiástica territorial…determinar si ha de usarse la lengua vernácula y en qué extensión; si hiciera falta se consultará a los Obispos de las regiones

limítrofes de la misma lengua. Estas decisiones tienen que ser aceptadas, es decir, confirmadas por la Sede Apostólica. La traducción del texto latino a la lengua vernácula, que ha de usarse en la Liturgia, debe ser aprobada por la competente autoridad eclesiástica territorial antes mencionada. En las Misas celebradas con asistencia del pueblo puede darse el lugar debido a la lengua vernácula, principalmente en las lecturas y en la «oración común» y, según las circunstancias del lugar, también en las partes que corresponden al pueblo…Procúrese, sin embargo, que los fieles sean capaces también de recitar o cantar juntos en latín las partes del ordinario de la Misa que les corresponde. Si en algún sitio parece oportuno el uso más amplio de la lengua vernácula, cúmplase lo prescrito en el artículo 40 de esta Constitución.
