Scientific, outreach and educational activities

Scientific topics relevant to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals.

In spite of the ability of photochemical reactions to generate compounds of relevant structural complexity, often rapidly through a single photochemical step, one of the reasons why light-promoted synthesis is getting attention nowadays is the need of mild, direct and non-polluting synthetic methods. The research that is currently done in this field is driven primarily by the need of avoiding an irreversible damage to the environment and by the economic motivation of avoiding the high cost of using nonrenewable energy resources and recovering polluted air and water. As a consequence, the use of light as an agent of chemical change can be considered as one of the most relevant contributions in Green Chemistry.

Among the processes induced by light, the photosensitized production of molecular singlet oxygen, the first excited state of the oxygen molecule, represents an excellent candidate to carry out chemical synthesis under these principles, taking advantage of its reactivity as an electrophile.

In this sense, mechanistic studies have been carried out about the photooxidation mechanism of thioketones in order to improve the generation of synthetic valuable products as S-oxides, a functional group which can be subsequently used in the obtention of heterocycles.

As well, the influence of the substitution pattern in BODIPYs has been also studied in order to gain insight about new singlet oxygen photosensitizers which could be used in different applications. Moreover, photosensitized singlet oxygen can be applied in photodynamic therapy, where tumour cells or pategens can be killed by photooxidative damage. Concretely, some advances have been done in the photoerradication of H. pylori, Helicobacter pylori is a Gram-negative bacterium that colonizes human gastric mucosa. It is considered one of the most widespread pathogens among the world’s population. The global rate of infection reaches around 50% of the population, although in some less developed countries this rate can be increased to 80%. H. pylori infection is associated with inflammation of the gastric mucosa, which can evolve to the development of gastritis, gastric and duodenal ulcers, gastric adenocarcinoma and mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) lymphoma. The interest of this new therapy lies on the appearance of antibiotic resistant strains which are responsible of eradication rates less than 80-90% of success.
