Después, más influido por las corrientes artísticas y literarias vanguardistas, Vallejo escribirá un innovador libro que aún hoy sigue causando admiración: Trilce (1922). De sus demás libros de poesía solo verá publicado en vida España, aparta de mí este cáliz (1938), libro de tono admonitorio contra la injusticia ante la evidencia de la derrota republicana. Póstumamente aparecieron Poemas en prosa (1928-1938), Poemas humanos (1932-1937), La piedra cansada (1938) y otros versos aparecidos en antologías. De ellos, y junto a Trilce, quizá es Poemas humanos el que contiene los poemas más representativos de su innovador registro poético, así como de su peculiar visión social y humana, de rasgos apocalípticos y desesperanzados respecto al tipo de sociedad alienada e injusta que veía aproximarse.
