Rules for writing an essay

RTQ – Read the Question. What is it asking you to do? Follow the instructions.

ATQ ,be concise, relevance – Answer the Question, you’ve only got a finite amount of words, so don’t blow them on irrelevant facts, don’t just regurgitate information without cohesion, don’t blabber, keep it concise and effective. If it isn’t relevant, don’t include it.

Make a plan and stick to it – Castro didn’t go to war without a plan, so neither should you! Make sure you have a coherent and organised plan to help you, stick to your guns once that is over.

Opinions – Many questions are asking you for your opinion, so make sure you give it! Opino que, me parece que, es evidente que, es claro que, pienso que, creo que , es probable / posible que...

Using formal Spanish – don’t slang it up!

Past Papers

Rules for writing an essay

Point; Explanation, Evidence – Make your Point, Explain it, and then link it back to the Evidence to show why this is a good point. If you can’t see this in your essay – put it in!

Legibility & comprehension – many marks are lost due to not being able to read it – so be as neat as you can. Also think about trying not to overcomplicate things, if you can’t be understood due to unclear Spanish, that will also hamper your chances.

Structuring an essay : introduction, paragraph your ideas making a point per paragraph (PEE), conclusions.

Referencing (if applicable) – don’t plagiarise if the info didn’t come from your classes.

Using mark scheme as friend and not foe – Look at the copy of the mark scheme – where are the most marks available? Why not try to target that first.

Show off – Don’t be afraid to use complex structures which show off your

ability, like subjunctives (es probable que), si clauses (si no hubiera...), different

tenses (present, imperfect, pluperfect, past subjunctives, future & conditional

perfects), other useful bits of vocab.

Why did it impact Cuba?

Conclude it.

Traducción

Strategies for improvement - Translation

Re-read your translation – does it make sense in English or in Spanish? If not, try and re-word it.

Tenses – it’s all about accuracy – the fine details mean the difference between getting the mark, and not getting it.

Vocab – make sure you are on top of not only noting it down, but revising and learning it.

Endings – always check the fine details.

Spelling

Adverbs, verbs, nouns, adjectives – learn which ones mean what in English and in Spanish.

Structures – imperfect subjunctives and subjunctives can’t always be translated literally and word for word “consiguieron que los fabricantes ofrecieran coches”

managed to get manufacturers TO produce / offer cars…

Isolation of the word, see if it’s a cognate (denounce) a word that’s similar to the English. If not, isolate the word, and work it out from the rest of the

sentence’s context.
