Pastor’s Corner Esquina Del Párroco

Queridas Amigas y Amigos,

(Lc 12:49-53) Fr. John

Dear Friends,

“Divide et impera”, divide and conquer is a famous phrase attributed to the Roman emperor Julius Caesar relevant to the political, economic, military, or social sphere. Jesus, well aware of his cultural environment and the religious thought of his time, capitalizes on the strategy of “dividing” to reveal us the dynamics of the Kingdom of God that inaugura- tes a new reality. But to achieve this, it is necessary to cast down “fire”, a symbol of the transforming force that is Jesus himself. Since fire has the proper- ties of “separation” or “purification” it provokes a conflict between different realities such as sin, deceit, and death faced against freedom, truth, and life causing a “división” necessary for the triumph of the kingdom of love.

Therefore, Jesus is the great “Divider” of homes and families, of religious dogmatism and spiritual

tendencies, of social structures and passing fads.

Jesus does not come to establish peace, nor does he want to, but he comes to provoke a real conflicto between mother-daughter, father-son, mother-in-law- daughter-in-law, “three against two and two against three,” because only this way it is possible to unravel what is hidden in the intentions and pretensions of each person regarding following Jesus. Those who decide to follow him take up their cross and go forward; those who reject it turn around and abandon Him. Jesus is the dividing point of hu- man history which, in turn, is a history of salvation.

There can be no passivity or indifference, Jesus cau- ses a profound transformation that translates into eternal life. When Jesus arrives, he divides and conquers. (Lk 12:49-53)

Did you know?/Sabia Usted?

Meet all of your child’s teachers this year As children head back to school, parents should make every effort to meet the people their children will come in contact with — from their classroom teach- ers to those who teach the special subjects like art, music, or other ex- tracurriculars. Make the effort to have a face-to-face meeting with these people and know the school’s policies on abuse prevention and awareness. For more information, request a copy of the VIR-

TUS® article, “Three Things that Simply Must Be

Done,”at lacatholics.orgdidyouknow/.

SAINT OF THE WEEK

St. Rocco

Patron Saint of Surgeons and Pilgrims

August 16

St. Roch or Rocco was born to a noble family in Montpellier in the 1300's. Upon the death of

his parents, he gave away his earthly posses- sions and began a pilgrimage to Rome. When he arrived in Italy, the entire country was suf- fering from a massive epidemic. Rocco made his way throughout the country performing miracles to cure plague sufferers. When Rocco

fell sick at Piacenza, he was expelled from the city and was about to perish. But a dog found Rocco and brought his owner who aided him and became his acolyte. When he returned to Montpellier, he was suspected to be a spy, ar- rested, and locked in prison where he later perished. St. Rocco is the patron saint of sur-

geons and pilgrims. He is also invoked for protection against epidemics and the plague.
