The first “I do” or the second?
If you take some time to reflect on the “I do” in your life you will realize that this is the most powerful expression that you can say. It is the most important one that it is say related to you also.
As a prolongation of the Epiphany celebration, the liturgy invites us this Sunday to reflect on the baptism of the Lord. But there is another traditional topic on the solemnity of the Epiphany. In the gospel according to John, Jesus’s first manifestation was at the wedding in Cana of Galilee. Both are important as they are integrated in the Epiphany. Those “I do” that you find at weddings are very emotional but those that you find in your own baptism, in many cases say by your parents and godparents, are important too. On a day like this it’s interesting to reflect on them.
In a child baptism ceremony, parents are asked for the name of the child and what are they looking from the church for the infant. The next question is the most important of those three: “You have asked to have your child baptized. In doing so you are accepting the responsibility of training him (her) in the practice of the faith. It will be your duty to bring him (her) up to keep God’s commandments as Christ taught us, by loving God and our neighbor. Do you clearly understand what you are undertaking?” The godparents are
questioned too, to help your parents to fulfil this duty. (Just take some time to think what had happened since them).
The ceremony of Baptism goes on… the Liturgy of the Word, homily (I beg, short), and prayers of the faithful.
From there we move to the anointing before baptism and the blessing of the water. After that is when we find the other “I do’s”.
The celebrant at the baptism (ordained ministry or lay person in case of necessity) will ask your parents and godparents to answer in your name: 1) Do you reject sin, so as to live in the freedom of God’s children? 2) Do you reject the glamor of evil, and refuse to be mastered by sin? 3) Do you reject Satan, father of sin and prince of darkness?
In the past, in the tradition of the Church, as saint Cyril of Jerusalem explained, the triple renounce was said facing the West, as a sign of the darkness, and the triple confession of faith were said turning to the East, the place of the lights, symbol of the lost paradise and of the Jesus’ resurrection. (Cfr. Lecture XIX, 9).
The other “I do’s” that we find are those of our Profession of Faith: Next the celebrant asks for the threefold profession of faith from the parents and godparents: 1) Do you believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth? 2) Do you believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was born of the Virgin Mary, was crucified, died, and was buried, rose from the dead, and is now seated at the right hand of the Father? 3) Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting?
It is important that we take of our time a few minutes to reflect on the significance of those “I do” within our lives. Our baptism made of us children of the same Father. It brought to us the participation in Jesus ministry as king, priest, and prophet. Our response to those questions in our daily lives led us to conclude with the celebrant of the baptism: This is our faith. This is the faith of the Church. We are proud to profess it, in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
¿El primer "sí quiero" o el segundo?
Si te tomas un tiempo para reflexionar sobre los "sí quiero" en tu vida te darás cuenta de que es la expresión más poderosa que puedes decir. Es también la más importante que se dice relacionada contigo.
Como prolongación de la celebración de la Epifanía, la liturgia nos invita este domingo a reflexionar sobre el bautismo del Señor. Pero hay otro tema tradicional en la solemnidad de la Epifanía. En el evangelio según Juan, la primera manifestación de Jesús fue en las bodas de Caná de Galilea. Ambas son importantes ya que están integradas en la Epifanía. Los "sí quiero" que encuentras en las bodas son muy emotivos pero los que encuentras en tu propio bautismo, en muchos casos dicho por tus padres y padrinos, son importantes también y en un día como este es interesante reflexionar sobre ellos. En una ceremonia de bautismo de niños, se les pregunta a los padres el nombre del niño y qué buscan en la iglesia para el niño. La siguiente pregunta es la más importante de las tres: " Al pedir el Bautismo para sus hijos, ¿saben que están obligados a educarlos en la fe, para que estos niños, guardando los mandamientos de Dios, amen al Señor y al prójimo, como Cristo nos enseña en el Evangelio? A los padrinos también se les pregunta para ver si ayudarán a los a sus padres a cumplir con este deber. (Tómese un tiempo para pensar en lo que ha sucedido desde entonces).
La ceremonia del Bautismo continúa... la Liturgia de la Palabra, la homilía (quiera Dios, breve), y las oraciones de los fieles. De ahí pasamos a la unción antes del bautismo y la bendición del agua. Después de eso es cuando encontramos los otros "sí…". El celebrante en el bautismo (ministro ordenado o laico en caso de necesidad) pedirá a sus padres y padrinos que respondan en su nombre: 1) ¿Renuncian al pecado, para vivir en la libertad de los hijos de Dios? 2) ¿Renuncian a todas las seducciones del mal, para que no domine en ustedes el pecado? 3) ¿Rechazas a Satanás, padre y príncipe del pecado?
En el pasado, en la tradición de la Iglesia, como explicó san Cirilo de Jerusalén, la triple renuncia se decía mirando al oeste, como signo de las tinieblas, y la triple confesión de fe se decía mirando al este, el lugar de las luces, símbolo del paraíso perdido y de la resurrección de Jesús. (Cfr. Catequesis XIX, 9).
Los otros " sí…" que encontramos son los de nuestra Profesión de Fe: A continuación, el celebrante pide la triple profesión de fe a los padres y padrinos: 1) ¿Creen en Dios, Padre todo poderoso, Creador del cielo y de la tierra? 2) ¿Creen en Jesucristo, su único Hijo, nuestro Señor, que nació de santa María Virgen, murió, fue sepultado, resucitó de entre los muertos y está sentado a la derecha del Padre? 3) ¿Creéis en el Espíritu Santo, en la santa Iglesia católica, en la comunión de los santos, en el perdón de los pecados, en la resurrección de los muertos y en la vida eterna?
Es importante que nos tomemos unos minutos para reflexionar sobre el significado de esos "Sí, creo" en nuestras vidas. Nuestro bautismo hizo de nosotros hijos del mismo Padre. Nos trajo la participación en el ministerio de Jesús como rey, sacerdote y profeta. Nuestra respuesta a esas preguntas en nuestra vida diaria nos lleva a concluir con el celebrante del bautismo: “Ésta es nuestra fe. Ésta es la fe de la Iglesia, que nos gloriamos de profesar en Jesucristo, nuestro Señor. Amén.

I think every single person at some point in their life has asked
God why they are suffering or has blamed God for their
suffering. Every person goes through some sort of suffering in
their life whether its physical, emotional, psychological,
spiritual, whatever it may be. But the thing is, God does not
create suffering. In fact, God suffers with us by sending His
son to die for us and by Jesus Himself, becoming fully man
and entering into our suffering. Suffering comes from the evils
of this world as well as from what we feel as
mortals. Everyone will suffer at some point in their life, there
is no escaping it. The big thing is how do we deal with our
suffering? Do we turn to God? This week we are talking with
our year 1 teens about suffering and how we as Christians deal
and relate to it.

Creo que cada persona en algún momento de su vida le ha
preguntado a Dios por qué está sufriendo o ha culpado a Dios
por su sufrimiento. Cada persona pasa por algún tipo de
sufrimiento en su vida, ya sea físico, emocional, psicológico,
espiritual, cualquiera que sea. Pero la cosa es que Dios no
genera sufrimiento. De hecho, Dios sufre con nosotros al
enviar a su hijo a morir por nosotros y por el mismo Jesús,
convirtiéndose plenamente en hombre y entrando en nuestro
sufrimiento. El sufrimiento viene de todos los males de este
mundo, así como de lo que sentimos como mortales. Todo el
mundo sufrirá en algún momento de su vida, no hay forma de
escapar de ello. Lo importante es cómo afrontar nuestro
sufrimiento. ¿Nos volvemos hacia Dios? Esta semana estamos
hablando con nuestros jóvenes del primer año sobre el
sufrimiento y cómo nosotros como cristianos lo tratamos y nos
relacionamos con él.

ANGELES REGARDING FATHER
ALOYSIUS (AL) EZEONYEKA,
PASTOR OF
SACRED HEART CHURCH
IN VENTURA, CALIFORNIA
The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has
been informed that Fr. Aloysius (“Al”)
Ezeonyeka. Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Ventura, CA, who
is in Nigeria visiting family for the Christmas holiday, was
injured in an attack on the vehicle he was in. Father Al was the
sole survivor of what appears to be a random attack. He is in
the hospital under medical care. He is out of immediate danger,
is communicating with his family and recovering from his
injuries.
Archbishop José H. Gomez and Bishop Robert Barron,
Auxiliary Bishop for the Santa Barbara Region, join the Sacred
Heart Parish community in prayer and ask the faithful of the
Archdiocese to pray for Father Al so that he may make a full
recovery.

Ángeles que el Padre Aloysius (Al)
Ezeonyeka, párroco de la Iglesia Sagrado
Corazón en Ventura, California, quien se encuentra en Nigeria
visitando a su familia durante la temporada navideña, resultó
herido en un ataque al vehículo en el que viajaba. El Padre Al
fue el único sobreviviente de lo que parece ser un ataque al
azar. Él se encuentra en el hospital bajo atención médica. Está
fuera de peligro, comunicándose con su familia y
recuperándose de sus heridas.
El Arzobispo José H. Gómez y el Obispo Robert Barrón,
Obispo Auxiliar de la Región de Santa Bárbara, se unen en
oración con la comunidad parroquial de la Iglesia Sagrado
Corazón y piden a los fieles de la Arquidiócesis que oren por el
Padre Al, para que pueda recuperarse pronto y por completo.
