May is the month

of Mary

As we honor our earthly mothers on

Mother’s Day, we take this month to

specially honor our

spiritual mother who watches over us every day.

We give thanks to Christ for giving His Mother to

each one of us as one of His final acts while He

was hanging on the cross. The rosary will be

prayed before every Mass during the month of

May. Please join us.

Throughout this time of Easter, it is most fitting that the scriptures lead us into a deeper reflection on the reality of the Church. When Christ appeared to his apos-tles, he breathed on them the Holy Spirit. He made manifest how his death and resur-rection fulfilled the scriptures. Then, he prepared them to go out and proclaim the

message of his plan of salvation to all the nations. The first readings have focused quite a bit on how the Church accomplishes this. In the first reading we read how Paul and Barnabas “appointed elders in each church” (Acts 14). The original Greek text said that Paul and Barnabas appointed “πρεσβυτέρους.”

In English, we would say “presbyteroi.”

This word may sound familiar to you if you have heard of Presbyterian Christians. Yet, presbyteroi referred to elders who were assigned to a church in order to nurture the faith of the disciples. Eventually, the duties of the presbyteroi extended to celebrating the sacraments. This included especially the Mass. These were the early form of the parish pastor. The term “priest” refers to both bishops (episcopoi), who exercise the full ministry of the priesthood, and the presbyteroi, who serve the bishop within the parish as well as other ministries. For that reason, parish priests are more appropriately called

“presbyters.”

Parish priests are the presbyters, or elders of the church community. How amazing it is to see this role already exercised within the first century of the Church!
