The Oscars. The Super Bowl. TV talent shows. Your son's Little League championship. We live in a culture set on competition. The desire to "be the best" goes beyond hob- bies and into politics, the corporate world, and parenting comparisons at the park. This desire is as old as the hu- man race, and it surely arose in Jesus' day. While Biblical society was significantly less open and upwardly mobile than our own, power was attractive. From what we know, many of Jesus' disciples had come from lowly back- grounds. Now they followed an increasingly popular rabbi who seemed primed to do something big.
Jesus does his best to dissuade their high hopes by proph- esying his own defeat. "The Son of Man is to be handed over ? and they will kill him." Internalizing the message proves challenging for the disciples, and their attention remains fixed on earthly glory. "They ? [discuss] among themselves on the way who was the greatest." True to style, Jesus flips their pretensions on their heads. "'If any- one wishes to be first, he shall be the last of all and the servant of all.'"
We have heard these Biblical principles before. Do we be- lieve them? In our professional lives, do we do whatever we can to get ahead, or are we concerned with the entire team succeeding? In the lives of our children, are we more concerned with victory or with building character? Jesus doesn't condemn success, but he reframes it. "'Whoever receives one child such as this in my name, receives me.'"
Today's Gospel is a reality check. In God's eyes, our suc- cess will not be measured by worldly output alone but by how much love and service we offer to others in the pro- cess.

Los Oscar. La Super Bowl. Talentos de TV. El campe- onato de Little League de su hijo. Vivimos en una cul- tura basada en la competencia. El deseo de "ser el mejor" va más allá de los pasatiempos y la política, el mundo corporativo y las comparaciones de crianza en el parque. Este deseo es tan antiguo como la raza hu- mana, y seguramente surgió en los días de Jesús.
Mientras que la sociedad bíblica era significativamente menos abierta y móvil que la nuestra, el poder era at- ractivo. Por lo que sabemos, muchos de los discípulos de Jesús tenían antecedentes humildes. Ahora sigui- eron a un rabino cada vez más popular que parecía preparado para hacer algo grande.
Jesús hace todo lo posible para disuadir sus grandes esperanzas profetizando su propia derrota. "El Hijo del Hombre va a ser entregado? Y lo matarán". Inter- nalizar el mensaje resulta desafiante para los discípu- los, y su atención permanece fija en la gloria terrenal.
"Ellos? [Discuten] entre ellos en el camino quién fue el mejor". Fiel al estilo, Jesús voltea sus pretensiones sobre sus cabezas. "'Si alguien quiere ser el primero, será el último de todos y el servidor de todos'".
Hemos escuchado estos principios bíblicos antes.
¿Los creemos? En nuestra vida profesional,
¿hacemos lo que podemos para salir adelante o nos
preocupa que todo el equipo tenga éxito? En la vida
de nuestros hijos, ¿estamos más preocupados por la
victoria o por la construcción del carácter? Jesús no
condena el éxito, pero lo replantea. "'El que recibe un
hijo como este en mi nombre, me recibe'". El Evan-
gelio de hoy es un control de la realidad. A los ojos de
Dios, nuestro éxito no se medirá solo por el rendimien-
to del mundo, sino por la cantidad de amor y servicio
que ofrecemos a los demás en el proceso.
