Nerja is the eastern-most municipality on the Costa del Sol. Bathed by the Mediterranean Sea, its light and history create one of the most charming places in Andalusia. The beaches and natural landscape offer beauty and magic, making Nerja a paradise where time seems to have stopped.
One example of its long history are the paintings found in the Nerja Cave which were discovered in 1959 and could be the oldest cave art images in the history of humanity as they date back more than 42,000 years.
Under Muslim dominance, its name was Narixa which means “plentiful source” and this is the origin of its current name. It’s been a Costa del Sol preferential tourism destination since the 60’s.

There are two population centres: Nerja, which is the capital, and Señorío de Maro, where the famous and monumental Nerja Cave (declared a National Monument, it is visited by more than 500,000 people each year) is located in addition to the Maro-Cerro Gordo Cliffs Natural Area.

The typical products of today's gastronomy in Nerja are fish and tropical fruits like avocadoes, cherimoyas and mangoes, among others. With these ingredients, dishes are made such as pickled anchovy fillets, skewered sardines, avocado salads, Spanish paprika fish and clams, and fried fish.
