Description: Spanish 231 is the third level of Spanish at SFASU. It is designed to continue the development of students' skills in speaking, reading, writing and listening comprehension in Spanish and help them attain a better understanding and appreciation of Hispanic culture. The class will be taught in the target language in order to facilitate and encourage the students' interest in becoming fluent in Spanish, and students should make every effort to only communicate in the target language. This course presents grammatical structure, vocabulary and cultural knowledge necessary for effective communication in the target language.

Student Learning Outcomes: In this intermediate course students will gain a more thorough understanding of the Spanish Language at the intermediate level. The

course will emphasize the following elements: l) oral communications,

2) understanding of written texts in the target language, 3) original written compositions, and

4) an appreciation of the cultural makeup of Hispanic speaking countries through a series of assignments and discussions.

All these factors will contribute to provide a mastery of linguistic and cultural skills at an intermediate level to continue and contribute to their education in other fields and/or careers. Program Learning Outcomes for Majors:

Students will demonstrate the ability to engage in effective oral communication with native speakers of the target language.

1) Students will analyze and summarize authentic texts in the target language. 2) Students will write effective, original compositions demonstrating the ability to analyze, persuade and/or defend an opinion in the target language.

3) Students will apply critical thinking skills in comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.

4) Students will, if seeking teacher certification, demonstrate mastery of professional skills necessary to teach the target language.

5) Students will demonstrate mastery of linguistic and cultural skills necessary to pursue graduate study and/or careers.

Organization: This course will cover "Lección 13" through "Lección 18" in Vistas.

Attendance: Attendance is mandatory as participation is an integral part of your grade. Students who miss more than two classes must see the professor. After the second absence, 3 points will be taken off the final grade average for each additional absence.

Participation: Students are expected to come to class prepared to discuss the material indicated on the course schedule. As speaking and listening are essential components of learning a second language, students will be expected to participate actively during the class period. This type of participation requires that students are respectful and attentive to others. Distracting behavior will result in a low participation grade. Homework will be due before class begins or by the assigned date on the Supersite. Cell phones are not permitted in the classroom. They must be turned off and put away before class begins.

Supersite Assignments: These should be completed by the date indicated on the supersite. They may be done in the lab, or at any computer with an Internet connection.

Final grades are determined as follows:

Exams 40%

Tests / Compositions 25%

Participation (Attendance, Homework

and Supersite assignments) 15% Final Exam 20%

A = 89.5 – 100 B = 79.5 – 89.4 C = 69.5 – 79.4 D = 59.5 – 69.4

Exam Dates are indicated in the course syllabus. Exams will be given on the indicated date and there will be no makeup tests with the exception of excused absences.

Academic Honesty: Academic dishonesty, cheating and plagiarism will not be tolerated. All students in this class are expected to comply with university policies regarding academic honesty. Any student caught cheating will receive a grade of zero on the assignment and will be reported to the dean of his or her major school. All homework should be your own. Students are not allowed to use translation programs, native speakers, LRC workers or other students to assist them with assignments. Doing so constitutes academic dishonesty and will be dealt with according to university policy.

Withheld Grades: Ordinarily, at the discretion of the instructor of record, and with the approval of

the academic chair/director, a grade of WH will be assigned only if the student cannot complete the course work because of unavoidable circumstances. Students must complete the work within one calendar year from the end of the semester in which they receive a WH, or the grade automatically becomes an F. If students register for the same course in future terms the WH will automatically become an F and will be counted as a repeated course for the purpose of computing the grade point averages.

-3-Disability Services: In accordance with University policy, students with disabilities who need accommodations are expected to initiate a meeting with the professor immediately upon registering with Disability Services to discuss how accommodations included on the Special Accommodations Request form will be provided. Students with disabilities who may have special needs and have not requested support services should seek assistance through Disability Services.
