Mission Statement
Saint Mary’s is a vibrant, diverse, multi-ethnic Eucharistic community of faith in Woodside that seeks to bear witness to Christ’s living presence among us. In embracing Gospel Values, we strive to promote a welcoming environment that invites all to live in the
fullness of life in Jesus Christ. We seek to grow as a faith community through sharing our gifts and talents, our time and our treas-ures in order to support the Parish’s pastoral, faith formation, spiritual, outreach and support ministries.
My dear parishioners,
In last week’s bulletin I gave you the financial report of the parish from the last fiscal year
(September 1, 2013 – August 31, 2014) and a break down of the major repairs that were done. This
week, I want to explain a bit more about the expenses that we have. One of the expenses was the
payment of utilities. The total cost to the parish last year was $84,529 and that includes the church,
rectory and the school. The church uses an oil burner and the other buildings use gas. The costs
also include the electricity. To give you a perspective on that expense, we would need seventeen
weeks of the regular collection to cover that cost alone. Another expense you see is the diocesan
assessment. That is a bill every parish has to help the diocese, we pay a percentage of our weekly
collection to help pay the diocesan expenses. As I explained at the Masses last week, another major
expense is the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Fund, which was established to help Catholic Schools. Every
parish that rents any of their buildings pay 11% of their rentals to this fund and if you rent your
school, the rate is 16%. This money is then dispersed every year to the Catholic schools of the
dio-cese based on their enrollment to help cover costs and try to keep tuition down. The other major
ex-penses are salaries and benefits. Like any employer, the parish has to pay salaries, Social Security,
payroll taxes. We also have to provide benefits for our full time employees, which includes health
insurance and the retirement plan. Another big expense you find on the report was parish programs,
which includes our religious education program, CYO, etc. We have to pay for books, paper, phone
use and other office expenses. One last expense is the insurance bill, which was $61,398 last year.
The insurance is to cover accidents and such on parish property and insurance on our buildings to
pay for any repairs due to fire, storm or other hazards (but not wear and tear). As you can see, it
costs a lot of money to run a parish. Each parish has to be self-supporting in order to preach the
Gospel of Jesus Christ. We rely on the generosity of each person who attends Mass to help us meet
our costs. We should not rely solely on rental income because that can change and we also need to
save that money to pay for future repairs that will be necessary. Every parish survives based on the
generosity of its parishioners. Thank you to all who are faithful in your tithing. Please continue to
support St. Mary’s as we go forward.
God bless,
Fr. O’Connor

At the time of the writing of the bulletin, the cement base of the ramp was not completed, due to very cold and inclement weather. We are grateful to the generosity of so many; we have received $8915 towards the ramp. We received two gifts of $1000, one for $500, one for $250, two for $200 and eleven for $100. Plus many other gifts to help us pay for the ramp. Thank you, thank you!

Padre O’Connor
