mystery of our redemption in
Christ. Here, we grow in faith
and love for God and one
another. Our lives proclaim
the words of St. Paul: “You are
strangers and aliens no longer.
You are fellow citizens with
the saints and members of the
household of God”. (Eph 2:19)
You are welcome to journey
with us. Together with our
Blessed Mother, we give
ourselves to do God’s will on
earth as it is in Heaven.

rothers and Sisters in Christ,
I remember one day driving in the car with one of my younger brothers. I was
trying to explain to him that I felt strongly God was calling me to become a priest. I
had spent quite a few years in my own business as a cabinetmaker before entering
the seminary to study theology. My younger brother wanted me to go into business
with him. He was very upset when I told him that I was no longer interested in
being self-employed and making lots of money but rather I wanted to serve our Lord
in His Church as His Priest. When my brother heard this, he become angry and said
to me, “why are you wasting your life by becoming a Priest?” I remember the sting
and hurt of those words. I was not able to convince my brother of the joy that one
experiences by doing God’s will in their life. Often people who are trying to live the
faith as disciples of Jesus experience this hurt and rejection from those whom they
love the most, family members and friends.
In our Gospel today, Jesus returned to His hometown in Nazareth and preached in
the local synagogue. The people were astonished when they heard Him
preaching and teaching. They marveled at His wisdom and the mighty deeds that He
performed. However, they took offense at Him and refused to believe in Him. They
had little faith in Him because they knew His family and that He was a carpenter, and
the son of a carpenter. They could not accept that He was anything more or anything
greater even though they heard His preaching and teaching and witnessed His
miracles. They rejected Him as the Messiah and the Son of God, a divine Person. This
too must have hurt our Lord, that is, to be rejected by His own people.
Many people have experienced this rejection and hurt from their own family
members. It causes great suffering especially for parents as they watch their children
drift further away from the faith, bringing about a fear for their safety and salvation.
In our second reading by St. Paul to the Corinthians, St. Paul explained that he was
given a thorn in the flesh, and he asked God to remove it. God’s response was, “My
grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.” God sometimes
allows us to suffer things in life so that we can grow spiritually and deepen our trust
in Him. Sometimes He allows us to experience the hurt caused by the rejection of
our loved ones. When we experience this, we can better understand how Jesus
suffered this also. We can untie ourselves to Him more closely by uniting our
sufferings to His and trusting in His help and graces for our loved ones.

D IOCESE | THE BEA C ON | JUNE 24, 2021 | ca tholicbeac on@pa tersondioc ese .or g By CECILE PAGLIARULO REPORTERMORRISTOWN Just one day after receiving her Confirmation, Valerie Mejia spoke to her peers sharing her wisdom about the Eucharist during the latest youth night with Bishop Kevin J. Sweeney held at St. Margaret of Scotland Church here June 20.
“The holy Eucharist isn’t only the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ but it is also some-thing precious that has led for me to get closer to God,” said Mejia, who is a youth member at St. Margaret’s. “When I was younger, it was always my dream to walk down that path and say ‘Amen’ to receive his body and blood.”
Grateful for the gift of the Eucharist, she said, “When I receive the Body and Blood I feel so thankful to have a God in my life. Without God in my life, I would have been so lost in life and would have never learned to love myself as much as I know he loves me.”
This was the sixth youth Mass and Holy Hour with Bishop Sweeney held in the Diocese, which began
this past January. The theme for June was on the Eucharist. The youth events each begin with Mass followed by brief witness talks by young people followed by Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with music. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is also of-fered at each of the events. This month, youth of St. Margaret’s led the music.
At the start of the event, which was held on Father’s Day, the Bishop said, “It’s a joy to be with you tonight. We come now for the sixth time with the young people of our Diocese. We come to pray for our Diocese, for our young people, for our families. As we can see so beautifully, we come in this year of St. Joseph on this Father’s Day, ask-ing the intercession of St. Joseph, patron of the universal Church, the husband of Mary, the father of Jesus on earth to intercede for us.”
Reflecting on the Gospel read at the Mass, which recalled Jesus calming the

storm, the Bishop asked the young people to think about a person that is calm when a storm comes.
The Bishop spoke about his parents when reflecting on the Gospel. “When I was growing up, my sister, my brother, myself, my mom, and my dad. They’ll be fights. Probably because I didn’t do my home-work,” he said.
He then said, “My mom would repeat, ‘Jesus, help us. Jesus, we believe. Jesus, we trust in you.’
“Little by little, as I got a little older, she was asking Jesus’ help in difficult moments. In her own unique way, she was trying to build calm in stormy situations.”
During high school, the Bishop told the young people about how he learned to
spend time in quiet prayer — talking to Jesus or listening to him in Jesus’ presence.
The Bishop said, “Jesus could bring peace in the most difficult situations and he is calling us to be instruments of that peace.”
In talking about his father, the Bishop said, “I came to learn my father said his prayers as well, even though my mother said them more often. There was a faith he had deep down that I didn’t always see when I was a kid or teenager and when he was very sick before he passed, he was so much at peace. He was so grateful to God about all the gifts and blessings he had re-ceived in his life. For him the storm may have been a long storm, but he also came to

El Decimocuarto Domingo
del Tiempo Ordinario
H
Dios a veces
