Del Párroco

“My sheep hear my voice. I know them and they follow me” (John 10). This quote from Sunday’s reading compels us to ask who are the sheep who hear the voice of Jesus.

We dare not get into a conversation that consists of “counting sheep,” that is, counting how many follow Jesus and how many don’t.

Jesus does not do that in this passage. He simply says three things:

His sheep hear his voice. He knows them.

They follow him.

Everyone born in this world comes out of the womb already familiar with the native tongue of heaven, that is, the voice of the shepherd. So when we hear it in the scriptures, in the sacraments, and in a powerful way, the lives of those who follow him, we hear something familiar.

Jesus says he knows his sheep. Perhaps because his sheep know him. We are truly ourselves when we know God. We are truly what God made us when we hear his voice and get to know him. When we are our truest selves we are as God knew us when he created us.

That’s why someone who plugs up their ears so they don’t hear their shepherd’s voice lose their

knowledge of God. They lose their selves. They become someone other than who they really were. They become someone other than who God knew when he created them.

For that reason, even God can say, “I don’t know you.” This is much like how a friend might say to another friend who has lost his way, “I don’t know you anymore.”

We hear his voice. We know him. So we become more of who God made us to be.

Jesus knows those who know him.

"Mis ovejas oyen mi voz. Yo las conozco y me siguen" (Juan 10). Esta cita de la lectura del domingo nos obliga a preguntar quiénes son las ovejas que escuchan la voz de Jesús.

No nos atrevemos a entrar en una conversación que consiste en "contar ovejas," que es, contar cuántos siguen a Jesús y cuántos no.

Jesús no hacen eso en este pasaje. Simplemente dice tres cosas:

Sus ovejas oyen su voz. Él los conoce.

Lo siguen a El.

Todos los que nacen en este mundo salen de la matriz ya familiarizada con la lengua materna del cielo, es decir, la voz del Pastor. Cuando

escuchamos en las escrituras, en la sacramentos, y de una manera poderosa, las vidas de quienes lo siguen, escuchamos algo familiar.

Jesús dice que él conoce a sus ovejas. Tal vez porque sus ovejas lo conocen. Somos

verdaderamente nosotros mismos cuando

conocemos a Dios. Somos verdaderamente lo que nos hizo Dios cuando escuchamos su voz y lo llegamos a conocer. Cuando somos nosotros mismos verdaderamente somos como Dios nos conocían cuando él nos creó.

Es por eso que cuando alguien se tapa sus oídos para no escuchar la voz de su pastor pierde su conocimiento de Dios. Se pierden ellos mismos. Se convierten en alguien distinto a quien realmente fueron. Se convierten en alguien distinto a quien Dios conocía cuando los creó.

Por esa razón, Dios pueden decir, "yo no te conozco." Esto es muy parecido a cómo podría decir un amigo a otro amigo que ha perdido su camino, "Yo no te conozco ya."

Escuchamos su voz. Lo sabemos. Así que nos convertimos en más de que Dios nos hizo. Jesús sabe quienes lo conocen.

Don Roque era ya un anciano cuando murió su esposa. Durante largos años había trabajado con ahínco para sacar adelante a su familia. Su mayor deseo era ver a su hijo convertido en un hombre de bien, respetado por los demás, ya que para lograrlo dedicó su vida y su escasa fortuna. A los setenta años, Don Roque se encontraba sin fuerza, sin esperanzas, solo y lleno de recuerdos. Esperaba que su hijo, ahora brillante profesional, le ofreciera su apoyo y

comprensión, pero veía pasar los días sin que esté apareciera, y decidió por primera vez en su vida pedirle un favor. Don Roque tocó la puerta de la casa donde vivía el hijo con su familia.

-¡Hola papá, qué milagro que vienes por aquí! -Ya sabes que no me gusta molestarte, pero me siento muy solo; además estoy cansado y viejo.

-Pues a nosotros nos da mucho gusto que vengas a visitarnos, ya sabes que ésta es tu casa.

-Gracias hijo, sabía que podía contar contigo, pero temía ser un estorbo. Entonces, ¿no te molestaría que me quedara a vivir con ustedes? ¡Me siento tan solo!

-¿Quedarte a vivir aquí? Si… claro… pero no sé si estarías a gusto. Tu sabes, la casa es chi-ca… mi esposa es muy especial… y luego los niños…

-Mira, hijo, si te causo muchas molestias olvídalo. No te preocupes por mi, alguien me tenderá la mano.

No padre, no es eso. Sólo que… no se me ocurre donde podrías dormir. No puedo sacar a nadie de su cuarto, mis hijos no me lo perdonarían … o solo que no te moleste…

-¿Qué hijo?

-Dormir en el patio…

-Dormir en el patio… está bien. El hijo de Don Roque llamó a su hijo de doce años. -Dime papá.

-Mira, hijo, tu abuelo se quedará a vivir con nosotros. Tráele una cobija para que se tape en la noche.

-Si, con gusto… y ¿dónde va a dormir?

-En el patio, no quiero que nos incomodemos por su culpa. Luis subió por la cobija, tomó unas tijeras y la cortó en dos. Es ese momento llegó su padre.

- ¿Qué haces Luis? ¿Por qué cortas la cobija de tu abuelo? -Sabes papá estaba pensando…

-¿Pensando en qué?

-En guardar la mitad de la cobija para cuando tú seas ya viejo y vayas a vivir a mi casa. Padre Blas P. Herrador

Bethlehem Catholic Missions from the Roman Catholic Church in Bethlehem the Holy Land are visiting our parish this weekend, April, 20 & 21after all Masses. They will speak to us

about the Christian struggle in the Holy Land. They also have some beautiful olive wood carvings which are all handmade by the Christian people over there. This is a Church mission to maintain the existence of the Catholic people in the Holy Land. Catholics used to be the majori-ty over there but the percentage has now dropped to less than 1.5%. The proceeds from the sale will be used to buy food and other necessities for those needy families. Please help as much as you can. Thanks and God bless.
