Hi, I’m Nathan. In 2010, I visited South Africa with my family. My mum and dad lived there many years before I was born and they wanted to go back to see friends. It was my first visit and I was very excited. We visited the city of Cape Town and Sun City waterpark with its amazing waterslides. We drove along the coast to a place called l’Algulhas, which has a typical red and white lighthouse. It is also the place where the Pacific and the Indian Ocean meet. Sometimes you can see sharks here but we didn’t this time. I loved all these places but Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre was my favourite place. It’s a centre that takes care of animals that are endangered, abandoned, hurt or poisoned. When the animals are better they go back into the wild but some animals have many problems and stay at the centre. I saw a honey badger for the first time. It’s a mammal that looks very scary but it is very clever. It climbed up the gate and opened it with its claws! But the day was special because I walked with an eagle on my arm and felt a leopard’s soft fur. I met a baby rhinoceros that was as cute as a kitten and I learned how important it is to look after our wildlife. It was a perfect day and a perfect holiday.

Eat it all up!

Every year, we use a lot of plastic. Sometimes, this plastic gets into our rivers and oceans and it becomes very dangerous for the fish and other animals living there. Many people think that the problem is going to get worse in the future. We often use plastic for our food. We don’t eat this plastic, of course. But the food we buy in

supermarkets often comes in plastic bags and boxes. We use plastic shopping bags to carry our food home. And many of us drink water from plastic bottles.

So, what can we do about this problem? Well, how about buying food in bags and boxes that you can eat? This is a very unusual idea, but one company is making bottles of oil. They don’t use plastic to make the bottles – they use a type of sugar. To open the bottle, you break it (like an egg) and the oil comes out. Or how about a coffee cup you can eat? It’s possible to make a coffee cup from different ingredients, including a hard, white chocolate that doesn’t go soft when it’s hot. It’s also possible to make a type of paper using rice or potatoes – perfect for covering cakes or biscuits with.

Perhaps in the future, we won’t buy some food or a drink and throw the plastic away. We won’t use a lot of plastic because we’ll eat what the food comes in, too.
