Jesus said to Nicodemus: “Just as Moses lifted up the serpent in the desert, so must the Son of Man be lifted up, so that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.” For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.
And this is the verdict, that the light came into the world, but people preferred darkness to light, because their works were evil. For everyone who does wicked things hates the light and does not come toward the light, so that his works might not be exposed. But whoever lives the truth comes to the light, so that his works may be clearly seen as done in God.
The allusion to the serpent refers to an incident in Numbers 21:9 in which a bronze serpent raised on a pole by Moses was a source of salvation (Wis 16:6). John adds that the Son of Man also must be “lifted up.” Jesus, exalted to glory at his cross and resurrection, represents healing for all. Jesus’ purpose is to save, but some condemn themselves by turning away from the light. Eternal life as well as judgment are not only future events but are partially realized now. Eternal life is belief in Jesus.
Condemnation is non-belief in the light that is Jesus. At the center of John’s theology is the conviction that God is love and that this love is the dynamic principle for world salvation.
En aquel tiempo dijo Jesús a Nicodemo:
“Así como Moisés levantó la serpiente en el desierto, así también es necesario que el Hijo del Hombre sea levantado en alto, para que todo aquel que crea en él tenga la vida eterna. Tanto amó Dios al mundo que le dio su Hijo Único, para que todo el que crea en él no se pierda, sino que tenga vida eterna. Dios no mandó a su Hijo a este mundo para condenar al mundo sino para salvarlo. El que cree en él no se pierde; pero el que no cree ya se ha condenado, por no creerle al Hijo Único de Dios. La Luz vino al mundo, y los hombres prefirieron las tinieblas a la luz, porque sus obras eran malas: ahí está la condenación. El que obra mal, odia la luz y no viene a la luz, no sea que su maldad sea descubierta y condenada. Pero el que camina en la verdad busca la luz, para que se vea claramente que sus obras son hechas según Dios”.
La referencia a la serpiente recuerda el incidente en el libro de Números 21:9 en que una serpiente de bronce fue levantada por Moisés en el desierto como símbolo de salvación para los judíos. Juan compara ese hecho con el momento en que el Hijo del Hombre será también “levantado” en el madero de la cruz para la salvación de todos. El propósito de la vida de Jesús es salvar a todo el mundo, pero algunos se condenarán a sí mismos al rechazar la Luz. El amor de Dios no se impone jamás, pero quien lo rechaza se condena a sí mismo. Para Juan, Nicodemo es el modelo del verdadero discípulo por haber aceptado el don de la revelación en su corazón.

The spouse of Mary the mother of Jesus and the legal father of Jesus according to Jewish law, Joseph is a model of humility and obedience to God’s will. He followed God’s instructions, given by angels in dreams, and took the pregnant Mary into his home as his wife, protected her and Jesus at the child’s birth in
Bethlehem through the family’s sojourn in Egypt, and provided for them as a carpenter in Nazareth. This feast, which was celebrated locally as early as the ninth century, became a universal feast in the fifteenth century, when it was placed on the liturgical calendar.
Pope Pius IX named St.
Joseph Patron of the Universal Church in 1870; he is also the patron saint of carpenters, the dying, and workers.

od helps us in many different ways to live a moral life. He gives us grace, which awakens in us the desire to say no to temptation and sin and to choose only that which is good. He gives us the Theological and Cardinal Virtues and the grace to practice human virtues so that we can grow stronger in them. God gives us help and grace through the Church and through our reception of the Sacraments. He also teaches us how we should live. One way he does this is by giving us laws to guide our actions. The Ten Commandments are laws that God has revealed to us.Heeding the guidance God gives us in the Commandments will help us know how to serve God and how we should live with each other. It also helps us to be open to the grace of the Holy Spirit and what God can accomplish in us and through us by that grace.
