Seventh Sunday of Easter

Jesus , having completed the work of his Father, speaks of returning to him and of being glorified. As we share in his glory, so too do we share in Christ’s suffering. We have nothing to fear, however, since the Lord is our refuge. In his name do we gather, attentive to the Spirit.

Seventh Sunday of Easter

In today’s Gospel, Jesus prays, “ I have given You glory on earth by finishing the work You gave Me to do,” Good stewards follow His example by using their time and talents for the glory of God.

En el Evangelio de hoy, Jesús ora: "Te he dado gloria en la tierra al terminar el trabajo que me diste que hiciera". Los buenos mayordomos siguen su ejemplo usando su tiempo y talento para la gloria de Dios.

“PUSHED” OUT ON MISSION

There is a delightful character in the original Dr.

Dolittle Tales called the “Pushmi-Pullyu.” It is a beast

with two identical halves, with a head at each end. No matter which direction the beast walks, one end is the “push me” and the other is the “pull you.” Today’s feast is a bit like that in the life of the church. In the book of the Acts of the Apostles, it is the ascension of Christ that calls for the Holy Spirit, which consequently sends or “pushes” the church out on its mission. This is the mes-sage that we hear from the angels today as they tell the friends of Jesus not to look up into the clouds, but to get busy. It is the message of Jesus himself in Matthew’s Gospel, as he sends them out to baptize. He also tells them, “I am with you always, until the end of the age” (Matthew 28:20). And it is this message, confident in faith that Jesus has ascended to shouts of joy, that “pulls” us along to our final destiny. The life of the faith-ful disciple, sent into the world on mission, will one day know the same risen, ascended glory.

“EMPUJADOS” A LA MISIÓN

Hay un personaje encantado en Las historias del Dr. Dolittle llamado “Pushmi-Pullyu” [equivalente a Mempujas-Tehalo]. Es una bestia con dos mitades idénti-cas, con una cabeza en cada extremo. Sea cual fuera la dirección en que camina la bestia, un extremo “empuja” y el otro “hala”. La fiesta de hoy refleja algo parecido en la vida de la Iglesia. En el libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles, es la Ascensión de Cristo la que llama al Espí-ritu Santo, quien a su vez envía o “empuja” a la Iglesia a realizar su misión. Tal es el mensaje que hoy oímos decir a los ángeles cuando dicen a los amigos de Jesús que no se queden mirando hacia las nubes, sino que se pongan en acción. Es el mensaje del mismo Jesús en el Evangelio según Mateo, cuando los envía a bautizar: “yo estaré con ustedes todos los días, hasta el fin del mundo” (Mateo 28:20). Y es este mensaje, con fe llena de confianza en Jesús que ha ascendido con gritos de gozo, el que “nos empuja” hacia nuestro destino final. TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

Hace algunos años, el cantante de rock Carlos Santana y el grupo roquero Maná ganaron un premio en los “Latin Grammys” por su canción: “Corazón espinado”. Esta bella canción es de un hombre que lamenta el dolor que una mujer le ha causado. No la puede olvidar, porque ella le ha dejado el corazón espinado. Esta canción siempre me recuerda al Sagrado Corazón de Jesús, corazón rodeado por una corona de espinas e inflamado por el amor que le tiene a su mujer, la Iglesia, es decir, nosotros.

La devoción al Sagrado Corazón proviene de una monja francesa, santa Margarita María Alacoque a quien Jesús le mostró su corazón en junio de 1675. Jesús le dijo que su corazón arde de amor por los seres humanos, pero los cristianos sólo lo ofendemos con insultos, ingratitud e indiferencias.

¿Cuántas veces, como Iglesia o como individuos, le hemos espinado el corazón al Señor? Y aun así, la imagen del corazón espinado e

inflamado de Jesús nos sigue cantando y llamando para que seamos suyos. Si regresamos a él,

Jesucristo nos promete doce bendiciones de paz, consolación, fervor y otras gracias.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In the Easter season until now, we have heard ac-counts of the Risen Lord’s appearances to his disci-ples, sometimes individually, but most often when they are assembled together, and very often at meals. Now they are faced with the mystery of the Lord’s disappearance from their sight, coupled with a deepening awareness of his constant presence.

We recall the days when the church took shape from the quality of relationships forged among the first disciples through their following of Christ. From then on, they are meant to be the sign of Christ’s presence in the world. As we, the baptized, gather week by week, we too are shaped into a sac-rament of God’s justice for the world. Like the first disciples, we too are “works in progress,” unfin-ished works of art. Many of us are splashed with water at the beginning of Mass in this season, an effective and refreshing wake‑up call for us to en-gage ever more fully with our baptism. We are nearing the end of ninety days of renewal. Lent and Easter are drawing to a rousing close. Has Christ “Eastered” in you yet?

SAINT PHILIP NERI (1515-1595) May 26

In a shop near the Vatican, a group of Americans laughed as the shopkeeper showed off his fluent Eng-lish and latest souvenir, a key ring whose papal portrait, when pressed, activated a recorded blessing. Through the shop window, two clerics scowled disapproval. The shopkeeper grunted, “They’re a very somber order who’ve left the Church. I recognize them.” “By their long robes?” an American asked. “Many in Rome wear robes,” replied the shopkeeper. “It’s their long faces!” When Philip Neri arrived in sixteenth-century Rome, there was reason to be somber. Swiss Guards had been massacred on Saint Peter’s steps defending the pope. Parts of Europe were abandoning the Church. But Philip resolved to be an “apostle of joy,” drawing especially the young to Christ—and frequent confession and Communion—by his sincere interest in their problems, prayerful example, and gentle humor. His “Oratory,” a movement as well as a place, provided recreation and devotion in a joyful atmosphere of companionship, service, and liturgy. Philip Neri challenges each of us to begin improving Church and world by changing ourselves with unfailing joy.

SAN FELIPE NERI (1515-1595) 26 de Mayo

San Felipe tenía dos libros favoritos: el Nuevo Testamento y uno de chistes, sin duda que es el santo del buen humor. Su padre quiso que fuera comerciante, pero una visita a las catacumbas de los mártires trans-formó su vida. Estando en la universidad decidió educar a los jóvenes y vender todos sus libros para dar el dinero a los pobres, pues “sólo amar” es lo que cuenta. Se entregó en cuerpo y alma al apostolado juvenil atrayendo jóvenes ricos y pobres al cuidado de los enfermos, servicio en hospitales y vida de oración. Su inti-midad con Dios fue tan notable en su sabio consejo que éste fue buscado por obispos y papas; de hecho, fue director espiritual de grandes santos como Ignacio de Loyola y Carlos Borromeo. Fue ordenado sacerdote en 1551 y fundó un oratorio designado a la instrucción espiritual, al canto y a la caridad. Debido a su santidad y calidad de vida, uno de los papas quiso nombrarle cardenal y le dejó un sombrero cardenalicio en su cuarto, pero san Felipe lo utilizó para atrapar la pelota.

The mysterious coronavirus disease sends children to the hospital: It's called Pediatric Multi-Systemic Inflammatory Syndrome and a growing number of cases have been seen worldwide. Children and teens ran to the emergency room with high fever, abdominal pain and inflammation, which caused organs to not work properly.
