WEEKLY LETTER - THE SOLEMNITY OF THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD OF CHRIST
Since the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council, the laity of the Church have participated in many of the ministries that were previously reserved to the clergy or religious. Prior to the 1960’s, it was unthinkable for anyone other than the priest to even touch the Host. The reception of Holy Communion only took place while kneeling at the communion rail and only on the tongue. If one of the Hosts were to be accidently dropped on the floor, the communion rite was interrupted and the spot was immediately purified. Much of the old ritual might seem overdone to us now, but it served the purpose of evoking the significance of the Real Presence of Christ in the Sacrament of His Body and Blood.
Of all the liturgical ministries open to the laity, only the Eucharistic Minister is
commissioned. This is required due to the “Apostolic” nature of this particular ministry.
The ordinary minister of the Eucharist is first and foremost the Diocesan Bishop. His Apostolic ministry is extended to the clergy through the laying on of hands and the (Holy) Orders of the Church: first to order of Presbyter and then to the order of Deacon.
The Extra-Ordinary Minister of Communion is commissioned for a specified time and location to function in sacramental ministry. The “charism” of this apostolic mission is a sharing in the sacramental responsibility of the Bishop. For this reason, the Eucharistic Minister must be an example of Christian Living in their faith and conduct, striving to grow in holiness through the sacrament of unity and love. - Fr. Ted Rothrock
CARTA SEMANAL - LA SOLEMNIDAD DEL SANTÍSIMO CUERPO Y SANGRE DE CRISTO
Desde las reformas litúrgicas del Concilio Vaticano II, los laicos de la Iglesia han participado en muchos de los ministerios que antes estaban reservados al clero o religiosos. Antes de la década de 1960, era impensable que alguien que no fuera el sacerdote tocara siquiera la Hostia. La recepción de la Sagrada Comunión solo tuvo lugar arrodillándose en la barandilla de la comunión y solo en la lengua. Si una de las Hostias caía accidentalmente al suelo, el rito de la comunión se interrumpía y el lugar se purificaba de inmediato. ADULT, FAMILY & YOUTH MINISTRIES JUNE: MONTH OF THE MOST SACRED HEART
To help us grow in our faith, the Catholic Church has a devotional theme for each month. The month of June is dedicated to the Sacred Heart. In 1673, St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, a French Catholic nun, has visions of Jesus where he asked her to have a special feast established in honor of His sacred Heart. In the image of Jesus looking down, one hand extended out and another pointing to a heart wreathed in thorns and glowing with light, we see both the sorrow and the joy of the life of Christ. This symbol of God’s boundless and passionate love for all humanity is a way for each of us to be better disciples and to grow personally in holiness. Mass, novenas and recitation of devotional prayers in honor of the Sacred Heart are
traditionally observed by the faithful. You can encourage devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus by praying to the Sacred Heart to spread the devotion to others. As a family, make or purchase an Sacred Heart image and display it in a prominent place in your home. Other ideas to help you focus on the Sacred Heart are available on our website. However you choose to celebrate the month, may the Sacred Heart of Jesus inflame your heart with love for Him.
