I am the Bread of Life
Last week we heard about the miraculous feeding of 5,000 men by Jesus in the wilderness. This week we hear in the first reading how God fed his people Israel in the wilderness when they followed him out of Egypt. You probably remember the story of the
Exodus: How God showed his power to pharaoh and the Egyptians in the ten plagues. How in the tenth plague, God saved his people from death by the blood of the lamb that they sacrificed and used to mark their doors. How God’s people left slavery in Egypt by passing through the waters of the Red Sea. How they followed God into the wilderness and God cared for them by giving them bread from heaven to eat so they could have strength for the journey.
In the Gospel last week God’s people Israel followed Jesus into the wilderness, and God, Jesus Christ, fed his people with miraculous bread so that they could have strength for their journey.
Just like the Israelites, and just like Jesus’s first disciples, we too follow the Lord in a wilderness. The Israelites were saved from death by the blood of a lamb. We have been freed from death by the Blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ who died for us. The Israelites left slavery by passing through the waters of the Red Sea. We left slavery to sin by passing through the waters of baptism. The Israelites followed the Lord in the wilderness, journeying towards the promised land. Now we are journeying with the Lord through the wilderness of this life on our way, please God, to the promised land of heaven. The Lord fed the Israelites to give them strength for the journey, He fed his first disciples, and He will feed us too.
In fact, God has given us even more than those first
Israelites! “My Father gives you the true bread from heaven.
For the bread of God is that which comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Of course we know that it is Jesus who, being the eternal son of God, ‘came down from heaven’ when he was born of Mary to give us the eternal life of God. Jesus is the bread of life that does not just feed us for a day of earthly life, but ‘gives life to the world’ that no sickness, accident, or other person can take away. Jesus gives us himself in the Eucharist to be with us forever, to strengthen us for our journey, to unite us as His people, to join us to God the Father in worship.

Yo Soy el Pan de Vida La semana pasada escuchamos acerca de la alimentación milagrosa de 5000 hombres por Jesús en el desierto. Esta semana escuchamos en la primera lectura cómo Dios alimentó a su pueblo Israel en el desierto cuando lo siguieron fuera de Egipto.
Probablemente recuerde la historia del Éxodo: cómo Dios mostró su poder al faraón y a los egipcios en las diez plagas.
Cómo en la décima plaga, Dios salvó a su pueblo de la muer- te por la sangre del cordero que sacrificaron y usaron para marcar sus puertas. Cómo el pueblo de Dios dejó la esclavi- tud en Egipto al pasar por las aguas del Mar Rojo. Cómo siguieron a Dios al desierto y Dios los cuidó dándoles pan del cielo para que comieran para que tuvieran fuerzas para el viaje.
En el Evangelio de la semana pasada, el pueblo de Dios, Israel, siguió a Jesús al desierto, y Dios, Jesucristo, alimentó a su pueblo con pan milagroso para que tuvieran fuerzas para su viaje.
Al igual que los israelitas, y al igual que los primeros discípulos de Jesús, nosotros también seguimos al Señor en el desierto. Los israelitas fueron salvados de la muerte por la sangre de un cordero. Hemos sido liberados de la muerte por la Sangre del Cordero de Dios, Jesucristo que murió por nosotros. Los israelitas dejaron la esclavitud al pasar por las aguas del Mar Rojo. Dejamos la esclavitud al pecado pasando por las aguas del bautismo. Los israelitas siguieron al Señor en el desierto, viajando hacia la tierra prometida.
Ahora estamos viajando con el Señor a través del desierto de esta vida en nuestro camino, agrada a Dios, a la tierra prometida del cielo. El Señor alimentó a los israelitas para darles fuerzas para el viaje, alimentó a sus primeros discípulos y también nos alimentará a nosotros.
De hecho, ¡Dios nos ha dado incluso más que aquellos primeros israelitas! “Mi Padre les da el verdadero pan del cielo. Porque el pan de Dios es el que desciende del cielo y da vida al mundo”. Por supuesto, sabemos que es Jesús quien, siendo el hijo eterno de Dios, "descendió del cielo"
cuando nació de María para darnos la vida eterna de Dios.
Jesús es el pan de vida que no solo nos alimenta por un día de vida terrenal, sino que 'da vida al mundo' que ninguna enfermedad, accidente u otra persona puede quitarnos.
Jesús se da a sí mismo en la Eucaristía para estar con nosotros para siempre, para fortalecernos en nuestro camino, para unirnos como su pueblo, para unirnos a Dios Padre en la adoración.
¡Gracias a Dios por tan gran regalo!

The Red Cross currently is experiencing a severe blood shortage as the number of trauma cases, organ transplants and elective surgeries rise – and deplete the nation's blood inventory.
With hospital blood use up, the blood supply has fallen to critical levels. As a result of this shortage, some elective surgeries are being delayed until the blood supply stabilizes, delaying crucial patient care.
