“Bendito, Bendito” es uno de los más conocidos cantos tradicionales del pueblo Hispano/Latino

utilizado durante las horas santas y la adoración del Santísimo Sacramento. Les presentamos este

arreglo contemporáneo a tres voces con una voz aguda como discanto o contrapunto. Además, otra

novedad es la traducción al inglés (“O Blessed Be Our God”) para uso en comunidades bilingües.

Una de mis más claras memorias de la celebración de Corpus Christi de mi niñez toma lugar en

la parroquia de Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro en mi pueblo natal de Brawley, California.

Salíamos del templo en procesión acompañando al Santísimo Sacramento escuchando a los cantores

entonando Pange Lingua en latín. Ya afuera del templo, el sacerdote con el paño humeral cargaba

en sus manos la custodia debajo del palio suspendido con sus cuatro varas cargadas por cuatro

hombres. Recuerdo que mi padre era uno de los hombres que sostenía una de las varas mientras

caminaba devotamente en la procesión por la calle y todo el pueblo cantaba “Bendito, Bendito”.

Este canto es uno en la forma de himno religioso conocido como alabado y que se piensa fue

traído por los Franciscanos de México a la región de Nuevo México en el siglo XVI. Los alabados

formaron el repertorio religioso de la hermandad de los Penitentes, los cuales sostenían la práctica

de la fe entre las comunidades en una época cuando no tenían acceso a sacerdotes para celebrar

la Misa y los sacramentos. Una de las formas tradicionales del alabado consiste en doce líneas

de texto divididas en seis estrofas de dos líneas con la segunda línea repetida. En esta versión, y en

la práctica popular actual, la primera estrofa se utiliza como un estribillo. La letra sencilla expresa

una teología de la Eucaristía y piedad muy íntima y personal, interpretada con una melodía sencilla.

Es por eso que ha perdurado por varios siglos y sigue acompañando la religiosidad popular del

pueblo y la gran devoción al Santísimo Sacramento.

“Bendito, Bendito” is one of the most well-known traditional hymns in the Hispanic/Latino

community used during Holy Hours and adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. We proudly present

this contemporary arrangement in three voices with a descant. Also, we are happy to provide a

translation in English (“O Blessed Be Our God”) for use in bilingual communities.

One of my most cherished memories of the celebration of Corpus Christi from my childhood took

place in the parish of Our Lady of Perpetual Help in my home town in Brawley, California. Coming

out of the church in procession accompanying the Blessed Sacrament we listened to the cantors

chanting

Pange Lingua in Latin. Once outside the Church, the priest wearing a humeral veil,

carried the monstrance under the

baldacchino (canopy) suspended by four men each holding one

of the staves. I remember that one of the men was my father who devoutly performed his duty in the

procession through the streets while we all sang “Bendito, Bendito.”

This song is a form of hymn known as an

alabado (hymn of praise) and it is thought to have been

brought by the Franciscans from México to New México region in the 16th century. The

alabados

formed part of the religious repertoire of the fraternity of the

Penitentes (Penitents), who sustained

the practice of the faith among the communities in a time when there was little to no access to

priests or the Sacraments. One of the traditional forms of the

alabado consists of twelve lines of

text divided into six verses of two lines each, the second line being repeated. In this version, and in

current popular practice, the first verse serves as a refrain. The simple text expresses a Eucharistic

theology and piety that is very intimate and personal, that is interpreted through a simple melody.

Perhaps this is why it has endured for several centuries and it continues to accompany the popular

religiosity of a people’s great devotion to the Blessed Sacrament.
