“To deny people their human rights is to challenge their very humanity.”

Nelson Mandela of South Africa “Human rights” have been a hot topic in local and international politics since the 1960’s. Whether fighting for the right to marry the person of our choice or to end abuses like child labor all over the globe, Amnesty International has been in the trenches trying to make the world a better place. Amnesty International Day works to promote human rights and raise awareness of their abuses and how our choices affect them every day.

What can we do? * Educate yourself about situations around the world where civil liberties are most at risk. * Work to raise awareness about issues of human rights among your family and friends. * Seek out efforts such as Amnesty International or others close to home, like the “Peace and Education Coalition Immigration Roundtable” which are dedi-cated to human rights of our most vulnerable family and friends *

And tomorrow, Memorial Day, of course, is a day dedicated to remembering our family and friends who have died in wars. But it is also a day when many people plant their summer flowers and vegetables. So it is fitting that tomorrow is also “Learn about Composting Day”

Its hard to imagine the food waste left behind by a family of six — and multiply that by the number of families on a block, in the city, across the world….wow! Where does it all go? But did you know most food waste can be “composted” — a way of helping the food ‘break down’ in such a way that it can be worked into soil, whether outside in your garden or inside for your house plants. Its easy enough — a dark bin/ pail that can be covered partly is all you need — put it in the sun so the heat of the sunlight helps the material decompose. It needs to be kept just a little damp, the moisture helps. Then take a shovel or a big rake and turn it over once a week or so — and watch it become wonderful soil for your plants! Doing this you help save space on our Mother the Earth, and you save money on soil fertilizer and such.

“The ones crazy enough to think they can change the world are the ones who do”

This summer, we are inviting the residents of our com-munity to gather with others to have a series of masses celebrated throughout our blocks. Or maybe you know that many of your neighbors don’t attend mass regular-ly, and you prefer to have prayer on the block. If you and your neighbors are interested, we ask that you con-tact the parish office (376-3900).
