Seventh Sunday in Ordinary Time/Septimo Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
February 23, 2020 / Febrero 23, 2020

LOVE YOUR ENEMIES
In the Sermon on the Mount Jesus tells us once again that it is not enough for us to love only those who do us good; even the Pagans do this. What really makes a Christian different from the rest of humanity is his love for his enemies.
Sisters and brothers:
1) Christ’s way is new and revolutionary. If we flip through the pages of the Old Testament and read the history of the people of Israel, it is surprising how often we see a God who is quick to punish his people and fix their errors. Jesus corrects this vision and reminds us that from the most ancient of times God has proclaimed his commandment: “You shall love your brother as your own self.” God himself says that He is “slow to anger and abounding in love.” He is rich in mercy. Even when man falls a thousand times, God keeps repeating: “Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against anyone among your people, but love your neighbor as yourself.”
2) In Christ the eternal law of love reaches perfection. Christ incarnates this law in his own life. It is so much easier to be good when we keep our eyes on Him! The moral norms that once seemed like cold doctrines are transformed into paths of perfection that are both near to us and attractive. Jesus came to perfect the law and transform it into a commitment of love. And love never says, “enough.” The only measure of love is the very holiness of God. It is this same holiness that shows us the meas-ure and the way of how a Christian should love his neighbor. The way is goodness and mercy; the measure is “without meas-ure.”
3) Loving my enemy and praying for the one who persecutes me is no longer impossible. Because Christ has preached and practiced it from the cross. Today Christ asks us: “Do you want to be a son of God? Then follow my example.” Many Chris-tians have lived love to its ultimate consequences, from the first martyr, St. Stephen, to Father Maximilian Kolbe in Auschwitz; from the children who forgive the murderers of their parents to our very own companions who have made Christ’s message the basis of their life.
Sisters and Brothers:
We need not wait for the heroic moments to love without limits, to return good for evil, and to pray for our enemies. We can do it this very day, within the four walls of our home, our work, or our school; in those tiny moments when our heart forgives and forgets, when we build fraternal bonds with our neighbors be-cause we are moved by the thought of Christ crucified, dying for his enemies: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” And St. Paul also invites us: “Overcome evil with good.” Amen.
