Since 1974, National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2017 is January 29 - February 4.

The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2017 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Schools typically observe the annual cele- bration week with Masses, open houses and other activi- ties for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools

focus on the value Catholic education pro- vides to young people and its contributions to our church, our communities and our nation.

Catholic schools benefit all year long from the religious guidance, prayers and support parishes provide. Many parishes join in the National Catholic Schools Week celebra- tion by devoting a Mass to Catholic educa- tion. Schools start the week by inviting pa- rishioners and community members to par-

ish-centered events and school open houses that feature their outstanding academic programs, religious educa- tion and service opportunities.

world less cold and more just.” .

In today's readings we hear the Beatitudes, attitudes of behavior that Christ gave us. I have worked on many retreats for High School youth and my favorite has always been the one that uses the Beatitudes to help the teens look at their lives.

You may ask why? Well, I think one of the hardest lessons we need to learn as Christians is that we are utterly dependent upon God and mutually dependent upon each other.

The Beatitudes, attitudes for being disciples of Jesus, tell us: Blessed are the poor in spirit (the powerless);

those meek enough to let go of our egos; and those who hunger and thirst for a clean heart, that is, sanity through right relationship with God. Freed from self- focus we can pay attention to those who mourn, or those we've hurt, and the divisions in our lives. We can feel with others and become compassionate and merciful peacemakers. Living these attitudes is no small task. Let us ask God to help us be true followers of Jesus.

Have a blessed week.

Las Bienaventuranzas son actitudes para ser discípulos de Jesús, nos dicen: Bienaventurados los pobres de espíritu (los impotentes); Aquellos suficientemente humildes para dejar ir nuestros egos;

LIVE THE LITURGY

In today's competitive world, many people do not see justice and humility as virtues to acquire.

Yet Jesus makes a big point of giving us the beatitudes as the blueprint to follow for our lives. Being poor in spirit, meek, thirsting and hungering for righteousness, being mer- ciful, clean of heart, and peacemakers are all hallmarks of the true disciple and a child of

God. After doing all these things, however, the true disciple must be prepared for persecution. Are you

"NOBODY CAN DO EVERYTHING BUT EVERYBODY CAN DO

SOMETHING"

Thank you, Tere A, First Com- munion Parents and Students for the donation of sandwiches and desserts for our guests. Our guests enjoyed the sandwiches and the special treat of the jello cups, cookies and Becky's home baked sheet cakes.

Teresa Cherie is a member of St. Agatha Wingless An- gels. Teresa made contact with local shelters and cen- ters to deliver our remain- ing used clothing (along with fellow Wingless Angel Leo N) to a homeless rehab center, and the toiletries to a drop in shower center. The agencies welcomed these blessings with a full heart and open arms.

Thank you Teresa and Leo.

This is what being blessed and passing on blessing is all about. Amen.

From time to time we have bread and produce left from the Saturday Meal Program. We will leave these on a table in the entrance way inside the hall

for you to bring a bag and take. We do ask that you please keep this area clean and pick up anything that falls on the floor. Thank you in ad- vance.

Did you realize that the 12:15 PM Hospitality Ministry, aka Ushers, as the Bread of Life Ministry on Saturday's, go out into the community to spread the word by serving up food and prayers to the men and women who are waiting around to get a job for the day. On the Saturday following Thanksgiving they, as a ministry, prepare a hot sit down meal to serve our guests in the parking lot.

These acts of kindness are paid for out of their own pockets. Please give them a thank you nod and smile when you pass them on Sun- days.

Thank you for sustaining our attempts to encourage the spread of the kindness virus that can touch lives, can be/

Dear Family, have many blessed special moments this week as God provides you with comfort to do acts of kindness and to step out on his word to accept, appreci- ate and celebrate the blessing of diversity and unity in our community. Amen

Continue to be blessed and be a blessing as you join in with the groups of prayer warri- ors in storming the heavens with prayers for unity and peace everywhere. Amen THE
