Each household taking part in the cam- paign helps the Cathedral parish reach its goal toward helping our Diocese fund education, training and ser- vice to the faithful in all the Diocese. This includes Vocations (studies & housing), Ministerial training, Ministry in the jails, Social Ministries, Chancery opera- tional expenses, Youth programs and the Office for the protection of the Vulnerable. The fourth Sunday of Lent is some- times called Laetare Sunday. Lae- tare is a Latin word that means

“rejoice.” Even as we observe our Len- ten sacrifices, we rejoice in anticipa- tion of the joy that will be ours at East- er. The first part of today’s Gospel is the final sentence of Jesus’ reply to Nicodemus, the Pharisee who ap- proached Jesus at night. Nicodemus acknowledged Jesus as someone who had come from God and seemed to want to be a follower of Jesus. Jesus greeted him with the observation that one must be born from above to see the Kingdom of God. The dialogue be- tween Jesus and Nicodemus was about the meaning of this phrase. Nicodemus misunderstood Jesus at every point, but there was no animosity in his questions to Jesus. In part of that conversation, Jesus referred to an incident from the Old Testament. When the Israelites grumbled against the Lord during their sojourn in the desert, God sent venomous serpents to punish them for complaining. The Israelites repented and asked Moses to pray for them. The Lord heard Moses’ prayer and instructed him to make a bronze serpent and mount it on a pole. All who had been bitten by a serpent and then looked upon the bronze serpent were cured. By recalling this story, Jesus alludes to the salvation that would be accomplished through his death and Resur- rection. The second part of today’s Gospel is a theo- logical reflection on Jesus’ words to Nicodemus. The Gospel of John is known for this kind of reflection within a narrative. The words of the Evangelist are in continuity with the words of the prologue to his Gos- pel. In these reflections, John elaborates on themes found in his Gospel: light and darkness, belief and un- belief, good and evil, salvation and condemnation. We find here an observation about human sinfulness. Jesus is the light that has come into the world but people preferred the darkness. We wish to keep our sins hid- den, even from God. Jesus has come into the world to reveal our sins so that they may be forgiven. This is the Good News; the reason for our rejoicing in this season of Lent and throughout our lives.

aint of the Week Saint John Ogilvie 1579 – March 10, 1615

John Ogilvie was raised as a Calvinist. He became interested in debates between Catholic and Calvinist scholars and turned to Scripture. “Come to me all you who are weary and find life burdensome, and I will refresh you.” John dis- covered that the Catholic Church could embrace all kinds of people, among which, he noted, were many martyrs. He was received into the Church at Louvain, Belgium, in 1596 at 17.

He continued his studies, first with the Benedictines, then at the Jesuit College at Olmutz where for 10 years he underwent rigorous intellectual and spiritual training. At his ordination in France in 1610, John met two Jesuits who had just returned from Scotland after suffering arrest and imprisonment. A fire was lit within him. After pleading for 2 years, he was allowed to secretly enter Scotland, posing as a horse trader or soldier.

Unable work among the few Catholics there, John returned to Paris to consult his superiors. Rebuked for having left Scot- land, he was sent back. He achieved some success in making converts and in secretly serving Scottish Catholics. But he was soon betrayed, arrested, and brought before the court. His trial dragged on until he had been without food for 26 hours.

He was imprisoned and deprived of sleep. For eight days and nights he was dragged around, prodded with sticks, his hair pulled out. Still, he refused to reveal the names of Catholics or acknowledge the authority of the king in spiritual affairs.

At his third trial, he assured his judges that he would obey the king and defend his temporal power:

“But in the things of spiritual ju- risdiction which a king unjustly seizes I cannot and must not obey.” Condemned to death as a traitor, he was faithful even when on the scaffold he was offered freedom and a fine living to deny his faith. His courage and his mar- tyrdom were reported throughout Scotland. John Ogilvie was canon- ized in 1976, becoming the first Scottish saint since 1250.

The Diocese of San Jose, through the Office of Restora- tive Justice, has formed a support group for family mem- bers of incarcerated persons.
