LOOKING BEYOND OURSELVES
The message found in today’s readings is an oft-told story. Citizen Kane, Daddy Warbucks, and King Midas are only a few of the familiar fictional characters who thought enormous wealth could buy happiness and fulfillment. Daddy Warbucks admitted stepping on a few people in his climb to the top. Kane tried to buy the printed word and stardom for his young wife, while King Midas conjured immense wealth and tragedy by his very touch.
We learn clearly in today’s readings that none of this is really possible. True happiness comes from caring for someone other than ourselves. It comes from the pursuit of the virtues Paul described to Timothy: faith, love,
gentleness, godliness, righteousness, and endurance. The Gospel reminds us that we dare not ignore the needs of others, acting as though we don’t notice their suffering. God’s call to us is much too clear to disregard for even one more day. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
MIRAR MÁS ALLÁ DE NOSOTROS MISMOS El mensaje de las lecturas de hoy es una vieja historia. El Ciudadano Kane, Papi Warbucks y el Rey Midas son sólo unos pocos de los familiares personajes ficticios que pensaban que con una enorme fortuna podrían comprar la felicidad y la completa satisfacción. Papi Warbucks admite haber pisoteado a algunas personas en su ascenso a la cumbre. Kane trató de comprar la palabra impresa y el estrellato para su joven esposa, mientras que el Rey Midas conjura inmensa fortuna y tragedia sólo con su toque.
Aprendemos claramente en las lecturas de hoy que nada de esto es posible. Alcanzamos la verdadera felicidad cuando nos interesamos en los demás. Cuando practicamos las virtudes que Dios describe a Timoteo: fe, amor, mansedumbre, piedad, rectitud y justicia. El Evangelio nos recuerda que no osemos ignorar las necesidades de los demás, actuando como si no notáramos su sufrimiento. A note from Fr. Jose
Aurelio
-I am Fr. Jose
Aurelio Ortiz Matiz, from
Colombia. I was born
October 7, 1965, and
ordained as a Vincentian
priest on July 6, 2003. After
my ordination I worked as a
teacher in Our Lady of
Immaculate Conception
Seminary in Garzon Huila,
Colombia for 18 months.
Next, I worked in a parish
with native people (Indians)
in Tierradentro Cauca, Colombia from January 1 to
May 30, 2009. On June 1, 2009, Bishop Richard
Garcia admitted me to work in the Diocese of
Monterey. I spent the first month in Castroville at Our
Lady of Refuge, and then four months in King City at
St. John the Baptist.
After King City, Bishop Garcia moved me back to
Our Lady of Refuge for two years, and then to
St. Patrick’s Church in Arroyo Grande, where I
remained for four years and four months. Bishop
Garcia has now moved me to Sacred Heart Church. I
am very happy to be here, and look forward to
working with this wonderful parish community.

- Soy el Padre Jose
Aurelio Ortiz, nací en Colombia el 7 de Octubre de
1965, fui ordenado sacerdote en la Congregación de la
Misión (Padres Vicentinos), después de mi ordenación
fui enviado a trabajar en el Seminario Nuestra Señora
de la Inmaculada Concepción en la Diócesis de
Garzón Huila Colombia, donde estuve por 18 meses;
luego me enviaron a trabajar con comunidades
indígenas, en Tierradentro Cauca Colombia, desde el
primero de enero del 2005 hasta 30 de mayo del 2009,
porque el primero de junio el Obispo Richard Garcia
me admitió para trabajar en su Diócesis de Monterey.
Primero estuve trabajando un mes en Castroville con
el padre Roberto Vera, y después trabaje cuatro meses
en King City con el padre Braulio.
Después de King City el obispo me mando de nuevo a
Castroville donde estuve dos años, luego me envió a
Arroyo Grande y allí estuve cuatro años y cuatro
meses y actualmente me envió a esta maravillosa
comunidad del Sagrado Corazón donde me siento
realmente feliz y bendecido por Dios.

SACRED HEART CHURCH FOOD PANTRY - Our food pantry is open
Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoons from 1:15 – 2:15 p.m. We are fortunate to be able to help many families and individuals with food bags filled with basic food supplies. However, we are currently in need of help to stock our shelves. If you can help us with donations of tuna, macaroni and cheese, soup, canned vegetables or fruit, rice or beans, or pasta, it would be greatly appreciated. Please bring donations to the Parish Office during working hours. Thank
