One important aspect of Social Justice is the Dignity of Work and the Rights of Workers. The economy is designed to serve the people, not the other way around. Work is more than a way to make a living – it is a form of continuing participation in God’s creation. This past year, Christ the King Church, in collaboration with the BREAD organization, has asked Columbus City Council to adopt tax incentives for companies that hire individuals released from jail. The goal is to to provide greater opportunities for such men and women to join the work force and contribute once again to their families and society. This is a social justice issue worthy of our time and attention.
Un aspecto importante de la Justicia Social es la Dignidad del Trabajo y los Derechos de los Trabajadores. La economía está diseñada para servir a la gente, no lo contrario. El trabajo es más que una forma de ganarse la vida – es una forma de participación continua en la creación de Dios. From the Pastor’s Desk
A blessed Labor Day weekend to everyone! In my opinion, this is such an important holiday on our civic calendar. Our country takes a day to recognize the significance of work in human life. Each year, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB) offers a statement on this topic and expresses its concern for workers. I encourage you to read the statement in its entirety at usccb.org. Below is a key section, highlighting the thought of Saint John Paul II on the dignity of work and how it impacts the one performing it. Dignified work is at the heart of our efforts because we draw insight into who we are as human beings from it. Saint John Paul II reminded us that human labor is an essential key to understanding our social relationships, vital to family formation and the building up of community according to our God-given dignity. He wrote ". . . man's life is built up every day from work, from work it derives its specific dignity.” We know work has dignity because Jesus "devoted most of the years of his life on earth to manual work at the carpenter's bench. This circumstance constitutes in itself the most eloquent 'Gospel of work,' showing that the basis for determining the value of human work is not primarily the kind of work being done but the fact that the one who is doing it is a person."
I would be remiss not to mention that this weekend Pope Francis is canonizing one of the most recognizable Catholics of the twentieth century. Saint Teresa of Calcutta impacted our world, witnessing to the power and beauty of the Catholic faith. She allowed the words of Christ “you did it unto me” to shape her spirituality and motivate her every endeavor. Her deep daily prayer gave her the courage to see and serve Christ in the poorest of the poor. The entire Catholic Church is now blessed by having recognized yet another heroic example of Christian virtue in Saint Teresa of Calcutta.

¡Feliz fin de semana del Día del Trabajo para todos! En mi opinión, esta es una fiesta muy importante en nuestro calendario cívico. Nuestro país dedica un día para reconocer la importancia del trabajo en la vida humana. Cada año, la Conferencia de Obispos Católicos de Estados Unidos (USCCB) ofrece una declaración sobre este tema y expresa su preocupación por los trabajadores. Los animo a leer la declaración completa en usccb.org. A continuación hay una sección clave, destacando una enseñanza de San Juan Pablo II:
El trabajo digno está en el centro de nuestros esfuerzos, porque a partir de él percibimos lo que somos como seres humanos. San Juan Pablo II nos recuerda que el trabajo humano es una clave esencial para comprender nuestras relaciones sociales, vital para la formación de la familia y la construcción de la comunidad de acuerdo con nuestra dignidad dada por Dios. Escribió que el trabajo es la dimensión "...de la que la vida del hombre está hecha cada día, de la que deriva la propia dignidad específica". Sabemos que el trabajo tiene dignidad porque Jesús "dedicó la mayor parte de los años de su vida terrena al trabajo manual como carpintero. Esta circunstancia constituye en sí el más elocuente 'Evangelio del trabajo', mostrando que el fundamento para determinar el valor del trabajo humano no es precisamente el tipo de trabajo que se realiza, sino el hecho de que quien lo realiza es una persona”.
Sería negligente si no mencionara que este fin de semana el Papa Francisco está canonizando a una de las católicas más reconocidas del siglo XX. Santa Teresa de Calcuta impactó nuestro mundo, testimoniando la fuerza y belleza de la fe católica. Ella permitió que las palabras de Cristo "a mí me lo hiciste" dieran forma a su espiritualidad. Su profunda oración diaria le dio el valor para ver y servir a Cristo en los más pobres entre los pobres. Toda la Iglesia Católica es bendecida reconociendo un ejemplo heroico más de la virtud cristiana en Santa Teresa de Calcuta.

All Saints Academy Catholic School
We have begun our new school year. We have all classroom spaces being utilized and are excited for the year. The Windows on the Dover side of the building will be installed very soon. Thank you to our $1000 donors for helping us achieve this phase in our window replacement project. We will be accepting donations for the front side of the building this year. Any amount is appreciated. We will continue to work closely with the Catholic Foundations which has committed to matching funds again for the last phase of the windows.
Outside the Parish
A prayer service for those touched by Abortion will take place on Friday, September, 16, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Jessing Center on the campus of the Pontifical College Josephinum Seminary in Columbus. The afternoon will include Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, and the Sacrament of Reconciliation. No registration is needed. The 5th Annual Beauty of the Feminine Catholic Women’s Conference will be held on Saturday, October 8, at St Thomas Aquinas Parish in Zanesville, Ohio.
