Come and pray with us in the most Holy presence of our Lord.

Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Sorrows,
This Sunday is the second Sunday of Advent when the liturgy continues to guide us in our itinerary of preparation for the birth of Our Savior Jesus Christ. “Prepare the way of Yahweh in the desert. Make a level way in the desert for our God” (Isaiah 40: 3). We were waiting for Yahweh to prepare a way through the desert for these exiles to return to Jerusalem. What we find is the opposite: Jerusalem is the one who prepares a way for God. First, why would God need these people to prepare a road for him? Second, how should they get the job done? God does not need these people to wield a shovel and pick, to create a highway through the desert for him. If you are to prepare for the Lord's coming, your preparation should include some kind of spiritual discipline, such as prayer and scripture reading, proper worship, and a pure life. In his opinion, it is the responsibility of celestial beings (angels?) to prepare the way for God to return to his people. "He will gather the lambs on his arm and carry them in his bosom" (Is.40:11). Isaiah uses the word "arm" in verse 10, where "his arm rules," and verse 11, where he "will gather the lambs in his arm." The strong arm capable of wielding a sword is also capable of gentleness and compassion. Lambs, like young children, cannot walk very fast or very far. Imagine how comforting it must be for a weary lamb to be picked up and carried in the strong arms of the shepherd, next to the shepherd's chest, next to his heart. The mother sheep will care for her lamb and will want to have her lamb close by. If the shepherd takes his lamb and carries it in his arms, the mother sheep will follow closely. It is the softest possible leadership the shepherd performs here: leading the mother sheep carrying his lamb in his arms. This is God's love for us, full of tenderness, capable of taking our flesh to redeem us. "John the Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins." (Mark 1: 4). He traces the path for us, a path of repentance and conversion. It should not be just a time to buy gifts, or just to decorate our houses for Christmas. They are very good practices, but the most important is our inner preparation, preparing our hearts for the birth of Christ. What do I need to change in my life to be more prepared for this great gift of the birth of our Savior? Let us ask the Virgin Mary to help us in our spiritual journey of preparation.
Father Dennis Venegas FEAST OF FAITH
Watching for Christ’s Coming
In the season of Advent, we look to the coming of Christ at the end of time, and we prepare ourselves to celebrate his first coming among us at Christmas. Remembrance of the past is combined with preparation for the future. Memory meets action.
In a certain sense, the Mass is an Advent prayer. At the Last Supper, Jesus did not tell his disciples, “Never forget what I did for you.” Instead, he said, “Do this in remembrance of me.” He calls us to remember by doing, to combine memory with action. In the celebration of the Eucharist, remembering and doing become one. Jesus is as present in our midst as he was in that upper room, breaking the bread and sharing the cup; but it is a new kind of presence, seen only with the eyes of faith. In the heavenly liturgy, there will be no need of sacraments, for there, “celebration is wholly communion and feast” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1136). Here, things are different. We have only glimpses and flashes of the beauty that is yet to be. And yet, in the liturgy, we truly participate in the heavenly liturgy. The Mass is our foretaste of the joys of heaven.
