La mayoría de las pruebas científicas muestran que si se toma alcohol en cantidades moderadas, el cuerpo no sufrirá daños graves. De hecho, algunos estudios recientes demuestran que una o dos copas al día pueden ser buenas para el corazón.

A pesar de estos descubrimientos, muchos expertos siguen señalando los conocidos efectos negativos que el alcohol puede causar a muchos órganos del cuerpo. Esta droga está asociada con la cirrosis hepática, es un factor principal en miles de accidentes, cuenta como una importante influencia en la violencia familiar y el divorcio, y juega un papel en la existencia de pandillas violentas.

Lo que hace el alcohol es deprimir el sistema nervioso central, produciendo menos actividad física y mental. Esto da como resultado una actitud más relajada y de mayor confianza. Como sienten más confianza en sí mismas, muchas personas creen que son más capaces, pero los estudios indican que tales sentimientos son pura ilusión.

No se necesita más que una copa para afectar las habilidades mentales y físicas, y en particular la de conducir, que demanda la buena coordinación y una mente alerta.

El alcohol actúa rápidamente porque puede evitar el sistema protector del cerebro.

La composición molecular del alcohol es tan pequeña que se le permite pasar

inmediatamente por la sangre al cerebro. Con moléculas más grandes, el alcohol no

lograría entrar al cerebro, no nos relajaríamos y es casi seguro que no lo beberíamos.
