Dear Parishioners and friends of Ascension,
This Wednesday, December 12th, is the Feast of Our Lady of
Guadalupe. Under that title Mary is the patroness of all the
Americas. In our parish we will have the traditional singing of
the Serenata/Mañanitas beginning at 10:30p.m. on Tuesday night.
A special Mass for Our Lady of Guadalupe will be celebrated on
Wednesday evening at 7:00p.m. in Spanish, followed by a festive
celebration in the school to which all are invited.
During the month of January, we will officially welcome the
“Emmaus Retreat” to Ascension Parish. The Emmaus retreat was
begun in 1978. It was devised by a team of lay women from the
parish of St. Louis in Miami, Florida. The team is spearheaded by
Mrs. Myrna Gallagher, who was encouraged by Fr. David Russell
to carry out this project. The retreat was initially conceived for
women and in 1987 the first men's retreat took place. Since then
the movement has spread to other Parishes throughout the
Archdiocese of Miami, as well as other cities in the United States,
the Dominican Republic and other countries in Latin America.
Although we will not officially ‘begin’ Emmaus here until the
beginning of the year, if there are any men wishing to participate
in an Emmaus Retreat (for men), 5 slots have been allotted for
Ascension. This retreat will take place on December 14,15, and 16.
If you would like to register or for more information, please
contact Daniel Corniel at 347-217-0366. Currently, the Emmaus
Retreats are just offered in Spanish.
Time goes by so quickly. In just over 2 weeks, we will celebrate
Christmas. As an Ascension Community, we have much for
which to be grateful. In keeping with our vein of “We Can Do it
Together as an Ascension Community”, the Finance Committee
asked me to invite parishioners to once again consider making
two Christmas gifts to Ascension Church. The first would be a
monetary gift of $250 - $500 if you are able to provide one, but
any extra donation is greatly appreciated. The second gift is
signing up for the automated gift-giving system known as Faith
Direct (see Faith Direct’s website - Ascension Church’s Code is
“NY588”). We have added many parishioners to Faith Direct
over the past few years but, in order to be a financially
self-sustaining Parish, we need more to support Ascension through
online giving. While we know much is being asked, we hope all
would see the sacrifice as having great value for us as a
Community.

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,
Este miércoles, 12 de diciembre, es la Fiesta de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe. Bajo esta advocación, María es la patrona de todas las Américas. En nuestra parroquia tendremos el cantar
tradicional de la serenata/mañanitas, comenzando a las 10:30 de la noche el martes. Se celebrará una misa especial para Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe el martes por la noche a las 7 en español, seguida por una celebración festiva en la escuela a la que todos están invitados.
Durante el mes de enero le daremos la bienvenida oficialmente al “Retiro Emaús” a la Parroquia de la Ascensión. El retiro Emaús fue comenzado en el año 1975. Fue ideado por un equipo de mujeres laicas de la Parroquia de San Luis en Miami, Florida. El equipo está encabezado por la Sra. Myrna Gallagher, que fue alentada por el Padre David Russell para desarrollar el proyecto. El retiro fue inicialmente concebido para mujeres y en el 1987, el primer retiro para hombres tuvo lugar. Desde entonces, el movimiento se ha extendido a otras parroquias a través de la Arquidiócesis de Miami, al igual que a otras ciudades en los Estados Unidos, la República Dominicana y otros países en América Latina.
Aunque no comenzaremos oficialmente Emaús aquí hasta el principio del año, si hay algunos hombres que desean participar en un retiro Emaús (para hombres), 5 espacios han sido asignados para la Ascensión. El primero sería un regalo monetario de $250-$500 – si puede proveer uno, pero cualquier donación adicional será muy agradecida. On Monday, December 10th, at 7:00 pm., the Thomas Merton Socie-ty will present a solemn Memorial Mass commemorating the 50th an-niversary of Thomas Merton's death in 1968, in Bangkok, Thailand. Fr Daniel Horan, OFM, will be principal celebrant and homilist. Father Horan is author of The Franciscan Heart of Thomas Merton, among many titles. Thomas Merton was baptized into the Catholic Church at Corpus Christi in 1938, and remained a monk/priest of the Abbey of Gethsemani until his death. Last Friday evening (November 30th), after a Mass celebrated in honor of Our Lady of Divine Providence, the patroness of Puerto Rico, we had a fundraising simple supper. Between the sale of tickets, donations, and the raffles, we raised, $6,692. Puerto Rico is still struggling. All of this money will be sent to the religious sisters of La Fondita de Caridad Marie Pussepin. They were able to do so much good with the money we sent last year. Thank you for your generosity!

SAFETY AND SECURITY
For the next few weeks, the main front doors of the church will be
closed until 11:30 AM. The doors will be closed again after the
noon Mass and re-open at 6:00 PM. This a an attempt to curb
illicit behavior in the church throughout the day, including
drink-ing and theft of our poor boxes. We need to maintain a safe
envi-ronment for the safety of all parishioners. The church will remain
open however to anyone who wishes to pray in the church from
10:00 AM and throughout the afternoon. We simply ask that all
parishioners enter and exit the church through the front of the
rectory when the main front doors of the church are closed.

Durante las próximas semanas, las puertas principales de la iglesia
permanecerán cerradas hasta las 11:30 AM. Las puertas se cerrarán

SANTA'S RECYCLING SALE!
Once again, the Religious Education students are asking for donations of gently used Christmas decorations, home decor, Christmas linens, mu-sic, gift wrap, ANYTHING Christmas. We will be selling these "recycled" items in the school gym on Sunday mornings from 8:30 to 11:00, and profits will go to the Religious Education Scholarship program. We will be collecting donations through January 15, so please remember us as you take down the tree, too!

Will begin distributing on the second Wednesday of each month, begin-ning on December 12, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. If you are in need of gro-ceries, please bring along Federal, State or City issued identification, as well as your own shopping bag, to the basement level of the Rectory on December 12, OR on Saturday morning, December 22 from 10 a.m. to noon in the Center. If you can help with donations, we are in need of dried potatoes, spaghetti sauce and all canned tomato products, canned tuna, mayonnaise, cereal, peanut butter and jelly, and rice. Monday, December 17th has been designated as Reconciliation Monday by the Archdiocese of New York, and the Diocese of Brooklyn. Confes-sions will be hear on that day in all churches. Here at Ascension, con-fessions will be heard from 3:00 - 7:00 PM.
