Now that Labor Day has come and gone, I would like to welcome all back from their summer vacations and summer holidays. September seems to be the time of the year when all things seem to begin again. Next weekend, we welcome Bishop John O’Hara to our parish. Bishop O’Hara is one of the Auxiliary Bishops of the Archdiocese of New York. Next Saturday, September 15th, we will combine the 5:00p.m. English Mass and 6:15p.m. Spanish mass and have one bilingual mass at 5:30p.m. Bishop O’Hara will be the principal celebrant. Several months ago, through the generosity of one of our parishioners, stained glass windows from our former convent were repurposed. They now
beautifully adorn the front of our church. There are five new windows, three of which are above the three main doors of the church, the other two are on either side of the front doors. The bishop will bless and rededicate those windows.
As I mentioned in last week’s bulletin, this weekend and next we are inviting and encouraging parishioners to consider becoming involved in some kind of parish ministry for this upcoming year. There is a bulletin insert today (handouts will also be available in the back of the church and in the rectory) with a list of many of the ministries that take place here at Ascension. (This list is not exhaustive.) We do this in the month of September since most are back from vacation and many new people, including college students, are finding Ascension. We wish to give an opportunity to all those who wish to serve in some way. Last year we received a very positive response. We hope that will be the case again this year.
One of the reasons that being involved in parish ministry (volunteering) is so important is because it is a very beautiful way of giving back to God.
Involvement in parish ministries is a way of thanking God for our blessings, our jobs, and our financial resources. We thank God not by simply sharing our treasure; we thank him by sharing our time and talent as well. We’d love to have you share your time and talent with our community. Please know that these forms are also available on our parish website as well. If you go to our parish website, there is a tab at the top of the homepage for Ministries and Parish Groups. We would encourage those who are able to please fill out this form electronically.

ETTERQueridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión, Ahora que el Día del Trabajo ya vino y pasó, me gustaría darle la bienvenida a todos los que han regresado de sus vacaciones de verano y días festivos. Septiembre parece ser ese tiempo del año en que todas las cosas comienzan de nuevo. El próximo fin de semana le damos la bienvenida a nuestra parroquia al Obispo John O’Hara. Mons O’Hara es uno de los obispos auxiliares de la Arquidiócesis de Nueva York. El próximo sábado, 15 de septiembre, combinaremos la misa de las 5 de la tarde en inglés y la misa de las 6:15 en español y tendremos una misa bilingüe a las 5:30 de la tarde. Mons. O’Hara será el celebrante principal. Hace varios meses, a través de la generosidad de uno de nuestros feligreses, vitrales de nuestro antiguo
convento fueron reutilizados. Ahora adornan bellamente el frente de nuestra iglesia. Hay cinco vitrales nuevos, tres que están sobre las tres puertas principales de la iglesia y los otros dos están cada uno a un lado de las puertas del frente. El obispo bendecirá y dedicará de nuevo esos vitrales.
Como dije en el boletín de la semana pasada, este fin de semana y el próximo estaremos invitando y alentando a feligreses a que consideren involucrarse en alguna clase de ministerio parroquial para el próximo año. En el boletín de hoy hay un volante (volantes también estarán disponibles en la parte de atrás de la iglesia y de la rectoría) con una lista de los muchos ministerios que toman lugar aquí en la Ascensión. (Esta lista no es exhaustiva). Hacemos esto en el mes de septiembre, ya que la mayoría han regresado de las vacaciones y mucha gente nueva, incluyendo estudiantes universitarios, están descubriendo a la Ascensión. Deseamos darle una oportunidad a todos aquellos que desean servir de alguna manera. El año pasado, recibimos una respuesta muy positiva. Esperamos que ése sea el caso otra vez este año.
Una de las razones que involucrarse en ministerios parroquiales (servir de voluntario) es tan importante es porque es una manera muy bella de devolverle a Dios. Involucrarse en ministerios parroquiales es una manera de darle gracias a Dios por nuestras bendiciones, nuestro trabajo y nuestros recursos económicos. Le damos gracias a Dios no solo con sencillamente compartiendo nuestro tesoro; le damos gracias compartiendo nuestro tiempo y nuestro talento

As noted last week, the Homeless Shelter returns
on 9/22 and we would love to see you
there. Volunteers of all ages, including children
and youth accompanied by a parent, are invited
to participate in this program. In addition to
supporting those most vulnerable members of our
community in getting back on their feet, we also get
a chance to share in fellowship, work together, and
have fun. Our volunteers bring a diverse array of
gifts and talents to share in the experience. This
year, we’ve made some improvements to make sure
the volunteer experience is more inviting,
comforta-ble, and memorable. Orientation will take place
on 9/9 at 1 pm. To attend orientation meet at the
Ascension School entrance at 220 W 108th street.

Como se señaló la semana pasada, el refugio para
personas sin hogar regresa el 22/9 y nos encantaría
verte allí. Voluntarios de todas las edades, incluidos

están invitados a participar en este programa.
Además de apoyar a los miembros más vulnerables
de nuestra comunidad para que se recuperen,

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
The RCIA at Ascension is a faith-sharing group accompanying adults in their preparation for the reception of Baptism, Eucharist and Confirmation. This process includes interactive discussions about the different aspects of the Catholic faith. If you are considering becoming a Catholic or are already baptized and would like to receive the sacraments of 1st Communion and/or Confirmation, the RCIA is the right place for you. Sacraments can be received at the Easter Vigil. RCIA meets every Tuesday night at 7 PM, beginning September 11th, 2018 in the Church rectory. RCIA also welcomes all Catholics who received the Sacraments, and seek to revive their faith and share their views of the Catholic Church. Ascension Culinary Institute (ACI)
Calling all youth, ages 10 – 21, interested in being part of the team at the Ascension Culinary Institute (ACI). This is the 11th year the ACI is accepting applications for the sum-mer/fall program. If you’re interested in cooking, experienc-ing new foods and culture, learnexperienc-ing cookexperienc-ing techniques and having fun while being safe, this is the summer program for you. Class starts Tuesday, July 31 and will be held once eve-ry Tuesday in the rectoeve-ry kitchen from 6:30 PM to 10:30 PM. In the fall we will move temporarily to Thursdays, with the goal of Wednesday evenings in process. Please go to the Ascension website and fill out the ACI Application.
