Blood Pressure

Your blood pressure changes over time and in response to many things. Blood pressure is written as two numbers, one over the other. The higher number is the pressure while the heart is beating. This is called systolic (sis-TOL-ik) pressure. The lower number is the pressure when the heart is resting. This is called diastolic (di-a-STOL-ik) pressure. If your blood pressure is 120/80, you say it is “120 over 80.” You have high blood pressure if your blood pressure is 140/90 or higher. High blood pressure is also known as hypertension. High blood pressure makes your heart work harder and can cause a heart attack, stroke and kidney problems. The good news is, you can take steps to lower your blood pressure.

CATEGORIES1

Normal blood Below 120/80 pressure

Prehypertension 120/80 – 139/89 (Likely to develop

into high blood pressure)

High blood 140/90 or higher pressure

If you have high blood pressure, you and your doctor need to agree on your blood pressure goal. The goal for most people with high blood pressure is below 140/90. The goal for people who have diabetes or kidney disease is below 130/80.

Pregnant women and children may have a different goal. Ask your doctor what your blood pressure goal should be.

Cholesterol

Cholesterol (ko-LES-ter-ol) is a fat-like substance found in the blood. It is a normal part of blood, but too much cholesterol can block the flow of blood to the heart or brain. With your doctor’s help, you can lower your cholesterol and prevent a heart attack or stroke.

There are different kinds of fat found in the blood.

■ HDL cholesterol is the “good” cholesterol. It helps keep the arteries from becoming blocked. ■ LDL cholesterol is the “bad”

cholesterol. Too much LDL cholesterol can block the arteries. ■ Triglycerides (try-gliss-er-ides) are

another kind of fat in the blood. They can also raise your risk of heart disease.

3 Your goals will depend on

your risk factors for heart disease and stroke. Ask your doctor what your cholesterol goals should be.

People with diabetes are more likely to develop heart disease. For more information about diabetes go to the American Diabetes Association website www.diabetes.org/diabetes-basics/. Keep track of your blood

pressure and cholesterol

There are usually no signs or symptoms of high blood pressure or high cholesterol. That’s why it’s important to:

■ Schedule regular visits with your doctor.

■ Have your blood pressure and cholesterol checked regularly. ■ Write down your numbers. ■ Stay on the treatment plan you

and your doctor agreed upon. Enclosed is a wallet card. Use it to keep track of your blood pressure and cholesterol. Show the card to your doctor each time you go into the office.

You can lower your

blood pressure and

cholesterol

High blood pressure and high cholesterol are never “cured.” You may lower your numbers by making lifestyle changes and taking medicines. Over time, this may help you decrease your risk of heart disease.

Here are some tips:

■ Get at least 30 minutes of

exercise most days of the week. You can do this 10 minutes at a time. (Always check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.)

■ Lose weight if you are overweight. (10 pounds can make a difference.)

■ Eat foods that are low in salt and fat. Eat a lot of fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy products. ■ Don’t smoke. If you smoke, pick

a quit date and ask your doctor for help.

■ If you drink alcoholic beverages, do so in moderation. For men, this means no more than two 12-ounce servings of beer or two 5-ounce glasses of wine or two 1.5-ounce servings of “hard” alcohol a day. Women or lighter weight people should have no more than a single serving of any one of these beverages per day.2 ■ Ask your family members for

help. Your family will be happy you are taking steps to live a longer and healthier life.

Taking your medications

is important

To get the most out of your medicine you MUST take it exactly as the doctor ordered.

Use these tips to help you get and stay on track:

■ Understand how much and how often you should take your medicine.

■Take your medicine at the same time each day. Make it your daily routine.

■ Understand why and when you should take your medicine. > How it helps you

> If you should take your medicine at a certain time

> If you should take your medicine with or without food

■ Set an alarm to remind you when to take your medicines.

■ Use pill boxes marked with the days of the week.

■ Order and pick up your refills before your medicine runs out. ■Keep taking your medicine.

Never change your dose or stop taking it unless your doctor tells you to do so.

Lowering your blood pressure and cholesterol may take a lot of time. Be patient and stay on your treatment plan.

Talking with your doctor

Your doctor is there to help you. To get the most out of your visits to the doctor:

■ Make a list of questions, symptoms and concerns before you go to see your doctor. ■ Take a family member or friend

along. They can help remind you of questions to ask or can write down the answers to your questions.

■ Tell your doctor how you feel, what you are doing or not doing to improve your health, and about any problems you may be having.

■ Bring a list of all your medicines with you when you go to the doctor’s office. This includes medicine, herbal supplements and vitamins you get without a prescription and from any other doctors.

■ Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you have a problem you think is caused by your medicine. ■ Tell your doctor if cost is a

concern. There may be another medicine that costs less and will work the same.

Every time you talk with a doctor, nurse or pharmacist, use the “Ask Me 3™” questions below to better understand your health. These questions were developed by the Partnership for Clear Health Communication. They were designed to help you talk with your doctor.

❒ What is my main problem? ❒ What do I need to do? ❒ Why is it important for me

to do this?

Keep asking questions until you understand the answer.

Coma muchas frutas, verduras y productos lácteos descremados.

■ No fume.
