Who Does He Think He Is?
Today’s Gospel is a continuation from last week’s reading. As a matter of fact, the first line of today’s Gospel is the last line of last week’s. “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” Jesus has been reading the Scripture in his hometown. The people were amazed at his teaching and spoke very highly of him until…
Wait a minute! Isn’t he the son of Joseph? Why is he challenging us? Why is he talking to us like that? He’s one of us. Does he think he is better than the rest of us? We are God’s chosen people! When they heard him describing how God had worked miracles for those who were not the “chosen” ones they became infuriated with him. How dare he say that to us! They drove him out of town and intended to hurl him off the hill, “but Jesus passed through the midst of them and went away.”
The crowds turned on Jesus quickly. When they didn’t like what they heard, they were no longer amazed at his teaching. They felt insulted. They became angry when faced with the truth about themselves. They became extremely defensive. Don’t we sometimes do the same thing? We don’t like to hear people say negative things about us or our family even when it is the truth. We become defensive and sometimes even retaliate.
St. Paul’s letter to the Corinthians this week is also a continuation from last week. St. Paul has been explaining the gifts we have received from God. He now talks about the greatest gift, love. This is the type of love that always acts on the behalf of another. He ended the letter today saying, “So faith, hope, and love remain, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” How often do we act or respond to others with love that acts on the behalf of others, especially when they say or do something we don’t like?
Our parish has begun the Renew My Church process. We pray that all those involved in the process will be open to the workings of the Holy Spirit and will always act and respond with love. We pray that no one reacts as Jesus’ listeners did in today’s Gospel. We are many parts, we are all one body. Let’s keep our faith, hope and love alive.

Why Does That Tall Guy Keep Leaving Mass?
If you regularly attend the English Masses, you may have noticed a tall gentleman being dismissed from Mass after the homily. Father says a prayer and then sends him out with Terry.
Jonathan Rouf is in the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults process or RCIA. The RCIA is a process where people who are interested in becoming members of the Catholic faith learn about our faith and deepening their relationship with God through Jesus. He has been formally studying our faith and meeting weekly since the summer. Jonathan is dismissed to continue to break open the Scriptures he had just heard. As an unbaptized person, he is not yet asked to profess the Creed. Also, as an unbaptized, he is not yet part of the “faithful”
whose responsibility it is to pray the Prayer of the Faithful or petitions. Jonathan is looking forward to receiving the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist at the Easter Vigil this year.
As a faith community it is the responsibility of each of us to accompany Jonathan on his journey. We are each asked to help form him in our faith. We are to pray for him and to serve as examples of living faithful lives.
We know that being a faithful Catholic is not easy. Please help support Jonathan and welcome him into our faith community.
Mantengamos viva nuestra fe, esperanza y amor.

TO BE A PROPHET
Today’s readings show us what it is like to be a prophet.
As Jeremiah recounts his call, God warns him that he will need strength and perseverance to withstand the hostility he will face from “Judah’s kings and princes” and “its priests and people” (Jeremiah 1:18b). God also assures him that they “will not prevail over you, for I am with you” (1:19). The psalm reflects both of these struggles as well as deliverance from them (“salvation”).
This is exactly what Jesus experiences in today’s Gospel.
After he claims that his own mission is the same as what Isaiah proclaimed, at first the people marvel at his
“gracious words” (Luke 4:22). Soon, however, they become suspicious, skeptical, and hostile, even threatening to kill him. But just as God promised to deliver Jeremiah, so Jesus “passed through the midst of them and went away” (4:30). Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.
