What’s In a Name?
Today, the last Sunday in Ordinary Time, we celebrate Our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe. So what does this mean for our Church and our own faith?
In all four readings for today (including the Psalm), Jesus is referred to by various names or titles. He is called: Son of Man, the Ancient One, firstborn of the dead, ruler of the kings of the earth, the Alpha and the Omega, the one who is and who was and who is to come, the almighty, and King. Even our Collect prayer reminds us “…that the whole creation, set free from slavery, may render your majesty service and ceaselessly proclaim your praise…” We are given many different ways to address or refer to Jesus.
Why????
For most of us, the image or notion of “king” is foreign. We have never lived under the authority of a king. History tells us that the United States of America was formed by people who were escaping the dictates of a king. Is that our image of Jesus as King of the Universe? Is his kingship something to flee because it is not just? Absolutely not, it is quite the opposite. Jesus is the most powerful, loving, and just King. He has power over the entire universe.
The Scripture readings give us a glimpse of what it will be like when our King’s divine plan for us is a reality. The Son of Man will receive dominion, glory, and kingship. He will have glory and power forever.
This is our loving King who has saved all people who believe in him and follow him. What a glorious day it will be!
Our Gospel reading is from John’s passion. Pilate is questioning Jesus, asking him if he is the King of the Jews. Jesus explains that his kingdom does not belong to this world. If it did his attendants would keep him from being handed over. Pilate doesn’t understand or even try to understand what Jesus is saying.
He is only interested in his own political future.
What about us? Do we take the idea of Jesus as our King seriously? Do we pay homage and glory to our King through prayer and worship? Are we loyal subjects following the example Jesus gave as to how to live our lives? Do we fight to defend our King, our faith? Do we try to bring others to his dominion by our words and actions? May Jesus Christ, King of the Universe be praised! That’s a name I trust.

Please be generous in this week’s special collection for the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. In the United States, one in eight people lives in poverty. With this collection, you support programs that address the root causes of poverty and provide a sustainable future for those struggling across the country. In addition, 25% of the funds we collect remain in our diocese to fund local anti-poverty projects. Please prayerfully consider how you can support this collection and those working on the margins. More information about the Catholic Campaign for Human Development can be found at www.usccb.org/cchd.

Our Giving Tree will have a different look this year. There are even more people in need this year. To keep everyone safe we will have a different way of participating in our parish tradition of helping others.
Our Giving Tree will not have ornaments on it for you to choose. We are asking only for gifts of cash or Walmart and Target gift cards. We will have a basket near our bare Giving Tree. We ask that all donations be in envelopes and that you deposit them in the basket NO LATER THAN SUNDAY, DECEMBER 12. There will be a second basket near the tree with ornaments in it.
When you place your donation in the first basket, we ask you to put an ornament on the bare tree. As the donations come in the tree will be decorated. The tree will be up by Thanksgiving day.
We believe this system will allow us to help those in need in a way that helps keep all of us safe. If you do not want to go to the Giving Tree basket you may drop your donation in the regular collection baskets but make sure you write “Giving Tree” on the envelope.
You may also drop your marked envelopes in the rectory mail slot.
We know many people are currently facing difficult financial situations. As in the past, the collection will help the children in the Courage program, families in need, and the homeless from the former PADS shelter.
