Talking About Career Possibilities

Have you decided what you would like to do in the future? There are so many options and possibilities that it’s never an easy choice. The best strategy (estrategia) is to keep in mind the things you really like to do. For instance, if you’re good with languages (los idiomas), you could become a translator. If you’re good at math, you may want to study accounting (contabilidad) or engineering (ingeniería).

Each university (universidad) has many school departments (facultades) to choose from. Decide which area you want to to major in (especializarse en), and chances are your school of choice will have that major, or specialization (especialidad). If you want to pursue a career (seguir una carrera) that is technical, you may want to go to technical school (la escuela técnica). There are many types of degrees (títulos) you can choose from. If you want to acquire a basic knowledge of economics (economía), you may only need an undergraduate degree. However, if you want to pursue law (derecho) or medicine (medicina), you will need graduate studies.

If you’d like to have your own business, you could study business administration (administración de empresas). To be the owner (dueño(a)) of company (una empresa) is not easy, though. You will need to to establish (establecer) your

company in the general market. You will also need to to hire (contratar) people who know your business well. A background in public relations (relaciones públicas) would be helpful.

There are some qualities that are important for all professions. These include:

apasionado(a) (passionate) cualifi cado(a) (qualifi ed) educado(a) (educated; polite) efi ciente (effi cient) fi able (dependable) fl exible (fl exible)

honesto(a) (honest, sincere) destacado(a) (outstanding) motivado(a) (motivated) versátil (versatile)

Finally, here is a list of several professions. Which appeal most to you?
