On Wednesday, February 14, Ash Wednesday Masses will be celebrated at 7:00 AM, 8:30 AM (with the school children), 12:00 PM, 6:00 PM, and Mass in Spanish will be celebrated at 7:30 PM. Ashes will only be imposed during the Masses.

Dear Parishioners and Friends of Ascension,

This week we will be celebrating our school in conjunction with Catholic Schools Weeks. Today is the first day of this special week. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2018 is “Catholic Schools: Learn. Serve.Lead.Succeed.” The theme encompasses several concepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. First, schools are meant to be institutions of learning. Hopefully through learning, Catholic school students learn and understand that their greatest strength is in the service of other people. That is a core gospel value taught by Jesus over and over again. Service enables us to become good leaders. Jesus was a powerful leader, and clearly his most powerful tool as a leader was his willingness to serve the needs of other people. This is why Jesus was so successful in his mission. His mission wasn’t centered around himself, it was centered around others, particularly those who were most in need.

The annual observance starts today, the last Sunday in January and runs thru Friday, February 2nd. Most schools, and our school in particular, typically celebrate Catholic Schools Week with a special Mass, open houses, and other activities for students, families, parishioners, and the community at large. There will be a special Mass celebrated on Tuesday, January 30th at 8:30a.m. -- the children from the school will be present. Tuesday, January 30th, is also Touring Tuesday for prospective parents. During the week, the school will have various activities and projects focusing on service to others ( Feed Our Neighbors Food Drive, creating care packages for schools in need, writing letters and cards to residents of Amsterdam House, etc.). Students will write essays, create art projects, power-points on the benefits of attending Ascension School and how living in faith and service will help throughout their lives.

Queridos Feligreses y Amigos de la Ascensión,

Esta semana estaremos celebrando a nuestra escuela en conjunto con la Semana de Escuelas Católicas. Hoy es el primer día de esta semana especial. El tema para la Semana Nacional de Escuelas Católicas 2018 es “Escuelas Católicas: Aprender. Servir. Liderar. Triunfar.” El tema reúne varios conceptos que están en el centro de una educación católica. Primero, las escuelas están indicadas a ser instituciones de aprendizaje. Esperamos que a través del aprendizaje, los estudiantes de escuelas católicas aprendan y comprendan que su mayor fuerza está en su servicio a los demás. Éste es un valor central evangélico enseñando por Jesús una y otra vez. El servicio nos permite convertirnos en buenos líderes. Jesús fue un poderoso líder y claramente su herramienta más poderosa como líder fue su buena disposición para servir las necesidades de otras personas. Ésta es la razón por la cual Jesús tuvo tanto éxito en su misión. Su misión no estaba centrada alrededor de él mismo, estaba centrada en otros, en particular, aquellos en más necesidad.

La observancia anual comienza hoy, el último domingo de enero y continúa hasta el viernes, 2 de febrero. La mayoría de escuelas, y la nuestra en particular, típicamente celebran la Semana de Escuelas Católicas con una misa especial, unas jornadas de puertas abiertas y otras actividades para los estudiantes, familias, feligreses y la comunidad entera. Habrá una misa especial celebrada el martes, 30 de enero a las 8:30 de la mañana – los estudiantes de la escuela estarán presentes. El martes, 30 de enero, es también “Touring Tuesday” para aquellos padres que desean visitar o hacer un recorrido de una escuela en particular. Durante la semana, la escuela tendrá varias actividades y proyectos enfocados sobre el servicio a los demás (colecta de alimentos de la Campaña de Alimentar a Nuestros Vecinos, haciendo cajas de provisiones para escuelas en necesidad, escribiendo cartas y tarjetas a los residentes del asilo, Amsterdam House, etc.). Los estudiantes escribirán ensayos, crearán

proyectos artísticos, presentaciones de diapositivas sobre los beneficios de asistir a la Escuela de la Ascensión y cómo vivir en la fe y al servicio a los demás les ayudará a través de sus vidas.
