Siempre escuchamos decir que la familia es la base de la
sociedad, y esta es una gran verdad. Pero pocas veces nos
damos cuenta de que así como la familia es la base de la
sociedad, el matrimonio es la base de la familia (Juan Pablo
II, Familiaris Consortio [FC] 21). El hombre y la mujer
hechos a imagen y semejanza de Dios (Génesis 1, 27) están
llamados a entregarse por el mismo impulso que el amor les
suscita, a donarse sin cobros, sin recompensas, motivados
simplemente por el gozo de buscar el bien del ser amado. Y
el único lugar donde esta alianza de amor, esta donación
to-tal del propio ser a la pareja, es posible es el matrimonio, la
unión indeleble que nace de una decisión libre y consciente
de la voluntad del hombre y la mujer (FC 11).
Dios, en su plan maravilloso para el hombre y la mujer,
creó el matrimonio como una comunidad íntima de amor
y vida basada en un compromiso indisoluble y de por vida
(Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica [CIC] 1603, 1644), a fin
de que el hombre y la mujer sean felices y fructíferos y
pue-dan así educar a sus hijos en los valores y la fe (CIC 1055).
Pero entonces, ¿por qué hay tantos matrimonios que
termi-nan, o que aun estando juntos, no son felices? Porque para
lograr un matrimonio feliz hay que amar a la pareja como
Dios ama: con un amor total, libre, fiel y fructífero (Juan
Pablo II, Teología del Cuerpo).
El amor conyugal verdadero, como el amor de Dios, ha
de darse totalmente, sin reservar nada para sí, ni buscar el
bien propio. Es un amor que se mantiene fiel y leal ante todo
y ante todos, exclusivo a la pareja y comprometido a ella
de por vida. Es un amor que da fruto de vida en los hijos, y
fruto de bendición para la Iglesia y la sociedad que fluye del
buen ejemplo, el servicio y el gozo que emana de una pareja
que se ama y se sirve verdaderamente. Sólo cuando se ama
de esta manera, la pareja puede experimentar la verdadera
felicidad que Dios planeó para ella desde el principio.
We always hear it said that the family is the basic cell of
society, and this is indeed a great truth. But lesser known
is the fact that, just as the family is the foundation of
soci-ety, marriage is the foundation of the family (John Paul II,
Familiaris Consortio [FC] 21). Man and woman, created in
the image and likeness of God (Genesis 1:27), are called
to give of themselves by the same impulse that love instills
in them and to practice self-giving without demands or
rewards, motivated solely by the joy of seeking the good
of the beloved. And the only place where this covenant of
love—this total donation of self to the partner—is possible
is in marriage, the indelible union born of a free and
con-scious decision of the will of the man and woman (FC 11).
In his perfect plan for man and woman, God created
marriage as an intimate community of love and life based
on an indissoluble lifetime commitment (Catechism of the
Catholic Church [CCC] 1603, 1644), so that man and
woman can be joyful and fruitful and can raise their
chil-dren with Christian values and faith (CCC 1055). But if
this is true, why do so many marriages end? And of those
marriages that endure, why are so many not truly happy?
The answer is simple. To achieve a joy-filled marriage one
must love one’s spouse as God loves us: with a love that
is total, free, faithful, and fruitful (John Paul II, Theology of
the Body).
Like God’s love, true conjugal love consists in giving of
oneself completely, without reserving anything for self or
seeking one’s own good. True conjugal love is the type of
love that remains faithful and loyal before all and above all
and that is reserved exclusively to married couples, those
committed to one another for life. It is the kind of love that
bears fruit in the children born of the marriage as well as
blessings for the Church and society that flow from the
in-spiring witness, service, and joy emanating from a couple
that truly loves and serves one another. Only when the
