24th Sunday in Ordinary TimeDear Sacred Heart Family,
I remember being invited to a wedding reception where I went to my assigned table and sitting at the same table was a person with whom I had had a falling out. We both made eye contact at the same moment and I could sense that he dreaded seeing me as much as I dreaded seeing him. I knew that he knew that I was a seminarian at the time, so I had to act quickly. I walked straight to him sat right next to him and said, “I just want you to know if there is anything I said or did that has offended you, I ask for your forgiveness.” Immediately there were tears and a short conversation en-sued about the specific details, and then a hug of for-giveness.
What incredible joy! What indescribable lightness in my soul! I immediately thought about how ridiculous it was that I had carried this around all this time when just talking it out could have filled me with such life and love. Had I not had the social pressure of being a seminarian, I might not have had the courage to simply address the issue, but God in His timing allowed this to be a growth opportunity for me. Peter does something very similar. He tries to find any limi-tation or condition for reconciling with his neighbor. Jesus gives him neither. In fact, Jesus reminds us through His con-versation with Peter that God our Father has forgiven us the impossible debt of our sinfulness through the blood of His Son. God’s infinite love provided payment for our impossi-ble debt so that He could commune with us in the deepest possible way. God made us His children, equal to Jesus Christ His Son. What an incredible gift!
This is why Jesus warns us that unless we forgive our neigh-bor from the heart in imitation of the infinite love of God Our Heavenly Father, then we our shutting ourselves off from God’s very grace, life and love. We, through our unfor-giveness and lack of charity, have chosen to separate our-selves from God. We are punishing ourour-selves by choosing to live in unforgiveness. We have chosen hell and not heaven. Jesus is clear on this. To love God is to love our neighbor, to love our neighbor is to love God.
Our spiritual life consists in allowing ourselves to enter into those relationships of unforgiveness and hatred and collabo-rating with the Holy Spirit to forgive and to love. King Da-vid, after his adultery and his sin with Bathsheba was made public, cried out to God, “Create in me a clean heart, Oh God, and renew a right spirit within me.” All of us have sinned and are in need of a Savior.
We pray that God would help us to forgive our enemies and give us the grace to pray for them and open us up to His tim-ing when we may have the opportunity to reconcile and bring down the Kingdom of Heaven to Earth.

XXIV Domingo Domingo Ordinario Estimada Familia del Sagrado Corazón,
Recuerdo que me invitaron a una recepción de bodas donde fui a mi mesa asignada y se sentado en la misma mesa estaba una persona con la que había tenido una pelea. Ambos hicimos contacto visual en el mismo momento y pude sentir que temía verme tanto como temía verlo a él. Sabía que él sabía que yo era seminarista, así que tuve que actuar rápidamente. Caminé directo hacia él, me senté a su lado y le dije: "Sólo quiero que sepas que si hay algo que dije o hice que te haya ofendido, te pido perdón". Inmediatamente hubo lágrimas y una breve con-versación sobre los detalles específicos, y luego un abrazo de perdón.
¡Qué alegría tan increíble! ¡Qué alivio indescriptible en mi alma! Inmediatamente pensé en lo ridículo que era que hubiera llevado esto en mi corazón todo este tiempo cuando simple-mente hablarlo podría haberme llenado de tanta vida y amor. Si no hubiera tenido la presión social de ser seminarista, tal vez no hubiera tenido el valor de simplemente abordar el tema, pero Dios en Su tiempo permitió que esto fuera una oportuni-dad de crecimiento para mí.
Pedro hace algo muy similar. Trata de encontrar cualquier limi-tación o condición para no tener que reconciliarse con su próji-mo. Jesús no le da ninguna. De hecho, Jesús nos recuerda a través de Su conversación con Pedro que Dios nuestro Padre nos ha perdonado la deuda imposible de nuestro pecado a tra-vés de la sangre de Su Hijo. El amor infinito de Dios propor-cionó el pago de nuestra deuda imposible para que pudiera comulgar con nosotros de la manera más profunda posible. Dios nos hizo Sus hijos, igual a Jesucristo Su Hijo. ¡Qué regalo tan increíble!
Es por eso que Jesús nos advierte que si no perdonamos a nues-tro prójimo del corazón, imitando el amor infinito de Dios Nuestro Padre Celestial, entonces nosotros mismos nos aleja-mos de la gracia, la vida y el amor de Dios. Nosotros, a través de nuestra impreoriedad y falta de caridad, hemos elegido se-pararnos de Dios. Nos estamos castigando a nosotros mismos eligiendo vivir en la imperdonidad. Hemos elegido el infierno y no el cielo.
Jesús es muy claro en esto. Amar a Dios es amar a nuestro pró-jimo, amar a nuestro prójimo es amar a Dios.
Nuestra vida espiritual consiste en permitirnos entrar en esas relaciones de impoja y odio y colaborar con el Espíritu Santo para perdonar y amar. El rey David, después de que su adulte-rio y su pecado con Betsabé se hizo público, clamó a Dios: "Crea en mí, Oh Dios, un corazón puro, y renueva en mi inte-rior un firme espíritu." Todos hemos pecado y necesitamos un Salvador.
Oramos para que Dios nos ayude a perdonar a nuestros enemi-gos y nos dé la gracia de orar por ellos y abrirnos a Su tiempo cuando podamos tener la oportunidad de reconciliarnos y derri-bar el Reino de los Cielos a la Tierra.

“Speaking truth to power” may have become just anoth-er cliché, but doing precisely that cost John “the Golden Mouth” (Chrysostom) his diocese and, after exile and a forced march, his health and life. “Renowned for eloquence, heroic in suffering” (Sacramentary), John’s scriptural in-sights still comfort and challenge. Mystical theologian, he bids Eastern Christians, whose principal Divine Liturgy bears his name, to lift up their hearts to “God ineffable, be-yond comprehension, invisible, bebe-yond understanding, ex-isting forever, always the same.” Model pastor, he warns Roman Catholics in the Liturgy of the Hours not to neglect God-in-the-flesh: “Would you honor Christ’s body? Do not scorn his nakedness, honoring him here in church with silk-en robes, while neglecting him cold and naked outside. What use to burden Christ’s altar with golden chalices, while Christ himself starves to death? What use dressing the altar with gold-woven cloths, while denying the shivering Christ the clothes he needs? Do not adorn the church while ignoring your needy brother: he is the most precious temple of all!” (Saturday, Twenty-first Week in Ordinary Time).
SANTOS CORNELIO (año 253) Y CIPRIANO (año 258)

Cornelio era un ciudadano romano que sucedió a san Fabián en el papado, luego de 14 meses sin obispo. El can-didato que aspiraba al cargo le creó serios problemas, pues calificó de ilegítima la elección papal de Cornelio. Además, se oponía a que se recibiera en la Iglesia a los apóstatas, mientras que el Papa Cornelio sostenía que sí, que podían ser readmitidos luego de una penitencia. En el 253 se decla-ró una persecución contra los cristianos y Cornelio fue des-terrado sufriendo el cautiverio y posteriormente la decapita-ción. Durante su destierro recibió una carta del obispo Ci-priano, quien le felicitaba por sufrir en nombre de Cristo. Este obispo se había convertido a los 45 años al cristianis-mo, renunciando a su vida placentera y abrazando no sólo el Evangelio, sino también a los autores cristianos, entre ellos a Tertuliano, quien le influyó notablemente. Gracias a su conocimiento de oratoria y retórica impulsó enormemente el cristianismo en África. Como obispo, fue firme y caritativo, enfrentó la persecución y fue decapitado. Ambos, Cipriano y Cornelio son recordados en la Plegaria Eucarística I del Rito Romano.
