Preparing Your Child for an Ultrasound
Can my child eat or drink the day of the exam?
Ask your care provider to check off the correct eating and drinking guidelines for your child. If you do not follow the
guidelines printed here, we must postpone your child’s exam.

• If potty trained, your child must drink at least 4 cups (1 quart) of liquid 45 minutes to 1 hour before the exam. • In rare cases, we may need to insert a catheter (a small, very soft straw-like tube) to fill the bladder. • Your child’s bladder must be full in order to get a clear picture. If your child is very uncomfortable or has a very strong need to pee before the exam, please tell us. We will find out how much longer the wait may be and offer ways to help. 1 Spanish

☐ For ultrasounds of the abdomen (belly), iliac vessels
(blood vessels near the pelvis), liver transplants or kidneys with Doppler: • For children 6 years and older, no food or drink for 6 hours before the exam. • For children 1 to 5 years, no food or drink for 4 hours before the exam. • Infants up to 1 year may have breast milk until 2 hours before the exam. • Infants up to 1 year may have formula until 4 hours before the exam.
☐ For ultrasounds of the head, neck, chest, arms, legs, hips
or testicles:
Your child may eat and drink as usual.
☐ For ultrasounds of the kidneys or kidney transplants
without Doppler:

Where do we check in?
Please arrive 15 minutes early. ☐ The University of Minnesota Children’s Hospital, Fairview, is at 500 Harvard Street. Take the public elevators down to the 1st floor. The Children’s Imaging and Sedation Center is in room 1-301, right across from the elevators. What will happen during the exam?
An ultrasound uses sound waves to produce pictures of the organs and tissues in the body. It is safe and painless. • Your child will lie on a bed in a room with soft lighting. • We will put some special gel on your child’s skin and rub a special wand (called a transducer) across the part of the body we want to see. • The wand sends sound waves through your child’s body. Your child will not feel or hear the sound waves. This will not hurt. Your child may feel pressure, or it might tickle. 3 Spanish 3

• The sound waves make pictures on a small computer screen in the room. We save these pictures for the X-ray doctor (radiologist) to study. You can ask to see the pictures.
How long will it take?
The test usually takes 30 minutes to 1 hour.
When will I know the exam results?
The radiologist (X-ray doctor) will write a report of your child’s test results. Your family doctor will discuss the results with you at your next visit.
How can I get my child ready for the exam?
• Explain the exam in words your child will understand. Ask what she or he wants to know. Many children want to know if the exam hurts or what it will feel like. Be honest but calm with your child. • Very young children should be told the day of the exam. They do not need to know too far in advance. • Talk with your child about the importance of doing what the staff asks. • Bring along a blanket, toys, a pacifier or favorite books to provide comfort during the test. • Please arrange care for your other children so that you are there for your child during the exam.
