Today we begin our journey through the liturgical season of Advent. For the next 4 weeks we will be celebrating Advent – not Christmas! This is the season for quiet pa‐ tience and simplicity. We tend to forget the role and importance of Advent. We are to prepare for the Savior, not for just whiz‐bang present giving and extravaganza. We need to let Advent Be Advent!
As we go through life, the truths of our faith stay the same, but we change. And so, eve‐ ry time we revisit them, we see new aspects of them. For example, it is one thing for a child to celebrate Christmas and welcome Jesus into the world. But it is a very different thing for someone who has become a parent to contemplate God becoming a little ba‐ by. It's the same mystery of divine love, but seen and appreciated from vastly different perspectives.
It is specifically for this reason the Church proposes us with the Liturgical seasons. I would say that there are two reasons behind the liturgical seasons, the first is negative, and the second is positive.
The negative reason is simply that the Church doesn’t want us to forget about what’s most important. By giving us a yearly tour through the liturgical seasons, the Church has a chance to cut through the urgent, busy things that distract us, and highlight the im‐ portant and lasting things in our faith journey.
The second reason behind the liturgical seasons is more positive. The liturgical seasons are designed to help us grow in grace. During each liturgical season, as we turn the at‐ tention of our minds and hearts to the different truths of Catholic doctrine and events of Christ's life, our souls receive fresh nourishment and enlightenment. The liturgical seasons help us grow spiritually in a balanced and healthy way, avoiding spiritual stale‐ ness and stunted growth.
God always has something fresh to say to us. Each event in Christ's life, celebrated through the liturgical seasons, is a flowing fountain of wisdom, and every time we go back to it, we are refreshed and strengthened anew; we grow in grace.

The St. Vincent de Paul Society will be distributing Christmas Baskets and gifts to children 12 and under on Saturday, December 16 at the Fremont Blvd. Site, from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m.
We are asking for donations of turkeys, chick-ens and hams. We have very little freezer space; we appreciate you bringing your turkeys, chickens or hams to the Fremont Blvd. Site by 9:00 a.m. on Sat., December 13.
The St. Vincent de Paul Society would like to thank you for your donations of money and food, we were able to help 60 families.

El día de hoy iniciamos nuestro recorrido a través de la Temporada Litúrgica de Adviento. En las próximas 4 semanas vamos a estar celebrando el Adviento – ¡no la Navidad! Esta es la temporada para la paciencia y la simplicidad silenciosas. Tendemos a olvidar el rol y la importancia del Adviento. Debemos prepararnos para el Salvador, no solo para el espec‐ táculo de dar regalos. ¡Debemos dejar que el Adviento, sea Adviento!
A medida que pasamos por la vida, las verdades sobre nuestra fe se mantienen iguales, pe‐ ro nosotros cambiamos. Así que, cada vez que las revisitamos vemos aspectos nuevos. Por ejemplo, es una cosa para un niño celebrar la Navidad y darle la bienvenida a Jesús en el mundo. Pero es algo muy diferente para alguien que se ha convertido en padre o madre y contemplar a Dios convertirse en un bebé pequeño. Es el mismo misterio de amor divino, pero visto y apreciado desde una perspectiva más amplia y diferente.
Especialmente por este motivo, que la Iglesia nos propone las Temporadas Litúrgicas. Yo diría que hay dos razones detrás de las temporadas, la primera es negativa, y la segunda es positiva.
La razón negativa es simplemente que la Iglesia no quiere que nos olvidemos de lo más importante. Al proporcionarnos un recorrido anual a través de las temporadas litúrgicas, la Iglesia tiene la oportunidad de cortar con las cosas urgentes y ocupadas de la vida que nos distraen, y resalta las cosas importantes y duraderas de nuestro recorrido de fe.
La segunda razón tras las temporadas litúrgicas es más positiva. Las temporadas Litúrgi‐ cas están designadas para ayudarnos a crecer en santidad. Durante cada Temporada Litúr‐ gica, al volver la atención de nuestras mentes y nuestros corazones hacia las diferentes verdades de la doctrina y eventos católicos de la vida de Cristo, nuestras almas reciben ali‐ mento y esclarecimiento frescos. Las temporadas litúrgicas nos ayudan a crecer espiritual‐ mente de una manera más sana y balanceada, evitando la vejez y el crecimiento atrofiado. Dios siempre tiene algo fresco que decirnos. Cada evento en la vida de Cristo, que celebra‐ mos a través de las temporadas litúrgicas, son como una fuente de la cual fluye sabiduría, y cada vez que regresamos a ella, somos refrescados y alimentados de nuevo; crecemos en gracia.
