PRESENTACION

Mejorar el conocimiento de las variables demográficas que influyen en los cambios de volumen y estructura de la población constituye una preocupación permanente de los países de la regíon. La actualización de las estimaciones de fecundidad, mortalidad y migración permite la revisión de las proyecciones de población de los países de América Latina.

El Centro Latinoamericano de Demografía en colaboración con organismos nacionales especializados mantiene actualizadas las estimaciones y proyecciones de población de los 20 países de América Latina y se preocupa además de publicar Boletines Demográficos con esta información.

Como en Boletines anteriores e n éste se publican las estimaciones y proyecciones de población de los 20 países de América Latina a partir del año 1950 hasta el 2025 incluyendo además un conjunto de indicadores demográficos implícitos en estas proyecciones. En esta ocasión se incorporan un conjunto de cuadros resúmenes de algunos indicadores a objeto de facilitar el análisis comparativo entre países de la región.

Generalmente se elaboran cuatro alternativas de proyecciones para cada pais que responden a igual número de supuestos futuros del comportamiento de la fecundidad: constante, alta, media o recomendada y baja. Los resultados que se incluyen en esta publicación corresponden a la proyección con la hipótesis de fecundidad media o recomendada.

Con esta publicación el CELADE espera satisfacer la demanda de planificadores e investigadores con información completa acerca de la dinámica demográfica actual y futura de los países de la región.

FOREWORD

It is a permanent concern of the countries of the region to improve their knowledge of the demographic variables which influence the changes in volume and structure of the population.

Updating of the estimates of fertility, mortality and migration makes possible the revision of the population projections of the countries of Latin America.

T h e Latin American Demography Centre, in collaboration with specialized national organizations, keeps the population estimates and projections of the 20 countries of Latin America u p to date and in addition concerns itself with publishing Demographic Bulletins containing this information.

As in previous Bulletins, the population estimates and projections of the 20 countries of Latin America from the year 1950 until 2025 are published in the present issue, including as well a set of demographic indicators implicit in these projections. O n this occasion a set of summary tables of certain indicators is incorporated with the object of facilitating comparative analysis between the countries of the region.

Generally four alternative projections are developed for each country, corresponding to that number of assumptions about the future behaviour of fertility: constant, high, medium or recommended and low. T h e results which are included in this publication correspond to the projection with the hypothesis of medium or recommended fertility.

With this publication, CELADE hopes to satisfy the needs of planners and researchers with complete information o n the present and future population dynamics of the countries of the region.
