Los discípulos habían estado con Jesús algún tiempo. Le habían escuchado predicar. Le habían visto hacer milagros. También habían visto como le rechazaban. Ahora les tocaba a ellos salir y hacer lo que habían visto hacer a él. Aunque esta era la primera vez, las instrucciones de Jesús son mínimas y austeras. La línea de fondo parece ser: “Vayan, hagan lo que he hecho yo, y sepan que van a enfrentarse a dificultades, pero confíen en que sus necesidades serán atendidas.” Imagínese a Jesús delante de usted, de su grupo de oración o comité, y diciendo estas palabras. De un modo muy real, esto es exactamente lo que ocurre cuando se nos despide, o más bien se nos envía, después de la celebración eucarística de cada domingo. El lugar y el tiempo, la cultura y las circunstancias son distintas, pero la llamada es la misma. La misión que Jesús dio a sus discípulos y nos da a nosotros no es algo que brote de sí mismo; es la misión que viene del Padre que Jesús recibió en su bautismo de manos de Juan. Cuando nosotros fuimos bautizados, se nos ungió como “profetas, sacerdotes, y reyes.” Por nuestro bautismo, somos llamados y se nos da el desafío de ser los portadores de la Buena Nueva y a predicar el arrepentimiento. La civilización occidental del siglo XXI es muy distinta de la Palestina del primer siglo. El simplificar nuestra “carga” nos presenta un desafío más grande que el de hace 2,000 años, pero no es imposible. Quizás no vayamos a ciudades cercanas, o a costas lejanas en nuestro trabajo misionero; quizás nuestro propio campo de misión sea nuestra familia, nuestra propia parroquia. (9) THE FIFTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Dear sisters and brothers in Christ, As you were leaving church after Mass a few weeks ago one parishioner began singing the song “Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime”. Like me, and perhaps most of us, she really only had the iconic first line down. I looked it up (naturally) and found out that it was released the year I graduated from grammar school and was rereleased the year I graduated from high school, but that time 5 or 6 bands did covers of it along with The Jamies who had composed it and first released it. The lyrics aren’t particularly profound. Maybe profundity is too strenuous an activity for the summertime. Unlike many summertime songs which are mostly about fleeting young love, this one is mostly about escape, no more studies, no more books; a message not entirely lost on a youngster leaving school, even if attending school has been mostly virtual for the last year and a half, at least for the summer. While I am away on vacation I am aware that there is no real vacation from our faith or from mission. It was not an escape for Amos in today’s first reading when he was called away from shepherding his flock and dressing his sycamores to become a prophet to the people of Israel. And in today’s Gospel when the Twelve are sent out two by two they are not escaping but entering more deeply into the mission and ministry of Jesus. I find it interesting that today’s Gospel specifically mentions how “they anointed with oil many who were sick and cured them”. For many of us the anointing with oil or the Sacrament of the Sick is still thought of as the anointing for “the final escape”. What a pity we do not turn to the Anointing of the Sick more readily when we are seriously ill or facing some serious surgery without waiting for things to turn for the worse. Fortunately we as a parish have instituted Masses of Healing twice a year and are planning to resume them after a pandemic hiatus on September 15th. Jesus gives us the sacraments to comfort us and draw us closer to Him. And, while it may be a comfort to see the priest draw near with the purple stole and the oils there are still too many who see this as a harbinger of winter rather than the summertime sacrament it is meant to be. Oh, there are times when we are too heated by the summer sun but after the long spell of cool weather do we not welcome the gentle warmth of “perfect” summer days? That is what the Sacrament of the Sick can be for us; the warmth of God’s healing touch, summertime in a drop of blessed oil. I heard someone say recently that “in every drop of rain there is a tiny rainbow”. Great thought. And, perhaps we might say, in every drop of blessed oil of the sick there is hope and spiritual healing. Devotedly yours in Christ,. Fr. Larry 9.

(10) XV DOMINGO DEL TIEMPO ORDINARIO Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,. Cuando salía de la iglesia después de la misa hace unas semanas, una feligresa comenzó a cantar la canción “Summertime, summertime, sum-sum-summertime”. Como yo, y quizás la mayoría de nosotros, ella solo tenía la primera línea icónica. Lo busqué (naturalmente) y descubrí que fue lanzado el año en que me gradué de la escuela primaria y fue relanzado el año en que me gradué de la escuela secundaria, pero esa vez 5 o 6 bandas hicieron versiones de él junto con The Jamies que lo había compuesto y lanzado por primera vez. Las letras no son particularmente profundas. Quizás la profundidad sea una actividad demasiado extenuante para el verano. A diferencia de muchas canciones de verano que tratan principalmente sobre el fugaz amor joven, esta trata principalmente de escapar, no más estudios, no más libros; un mensaje que no se pierde del todo en un joven que abandona la escuela, incluso si la asistencia a la escuela ha sido principalmente virtual durante el último año y medio, al menos durante el verano. Me parece interesante que el Evangelio de hoy mencione específicamente cómo "ungieron con aceite a muchos que estaban enfermos y los curaron". Para muchos de nosotros, la unción con aceite o el sacramento de los enfermos todavía se considera la unción para "el escape final". Qué lástima que no recurramos a la Unción de los Enfermos más fácilmente cuando estamos gravemente enfermos o nos enfrentamos a una cirugía grave sin esperar a que las cosas empeoren. Afortunadamente, como parroquia hemos instituido Misas de Sanación dos veces al año y estamos planeando reanudarlas después de una pausa pandémica el 15 de septiembre. Jesús nos da los sacramentos para consolarnos y acercarnos a él. Y, si bien puede ser un consuelo ver al sacerdote acercarse con la estola púrpura y los aceites, todavía hay muchos que ven esto como un presagio del invierno en lugar del sacramento de verano que debe ser. Oh, hay momentos en los que el sol del verano nos calienta demasiado, pero después del largo período de tiempo fresco, ¿no damos la bienvenida al suave calor de los días de verano "perfectos"? Eso es lo que puede ser para nosotros el Sacramento de los Enfermos; el calor del toque sanador de Dios, el verano en una gota de aceite bendito. Escuché a alguien decir recientemente que “en cada gota de lluvia hay un pequeño arco iris”. Gran pensamiento.
