VIDA ETERNA

LIFE EVERLASTING

The second book of Maccabees tells a powerful story, and a rather gruesome one at that. But central to it, beyond the horrible deaths inflicted upon the

brothers and their mother, is their belief in the promise of resurrection

and life everlasting in God.

Paul asks the Thessalonians to pray for him as he spreads Christ’s message of love, so that he might be delivered from other nonbelievers anxious to do him harm. The apostle is confident in such prayer, just as he is confident in the everlasting support of Jesus and God the Father. And there’s that “everlasting” word again. The Sadducees, not buying the idea, ask Jesus an interesting—albeit meaningless—question about the status of married life at the Resurrection. He tells the non-believers that marriage isn’t an issue for the risen children of God. More im-portantly, he assures them that their ancestors do live on in God, even as evidenced by the Father’s words to Moses.

Faithful Citizenship

From the United States Conference of

Catholic Bishops

As we cast our vote for the 2016 Presidential Election, we must examine closely what each candidate is proposing and how those proposals will affect us as Catholics. As a nation, we share many blessings and strengths, including a tradition of religious freedom and political participation. However, as a people, we face serious challenges that are

both political and moral. This has always been so and as Catholics we are called to participate in public life in a

manner consistent with the mission of our Lord, a mission that he has called us to share.

In this statement, we bishops do not intend to tell Catholics for whom or against whom to vote. Our purpose is to help Catholics form their consciences in accordance with God’s truth and the teachings of the Catholic Church. The Church’s obligation to participate in shaping the moral character of society is a requirement of our faith. It is a basic part of the mission we have received from Jesus

Christ, who offers a vision of life revealed to us in Sacred Scripture and Tradition. What faith teaches about the

dignity of the human person, about the sacredness of every human life, and about humanity’s strengths and weaknesses helps us see more clearly the same truths that also come to us through the gift of human reason. At the center of these truths is respect for the dignity of every person. This is the core of Catholic moral and social teaching. Because we are people of both faith and reason, it is appropriate and necessary for us to bring this essential truth about human life and dignity to the public square. We are called to practice Christ’s commandment to “love one another” (Jn 13:34). We are also called to promote the well being of all, to share our blessings with those most in need, to defend marriage, to protect the lives and dignity of all, especially the weak, the vulnerable, the voiceless. Even our right to worship freely is in danger. In no way must we compromise what the Church teaches.

Please pray for the gift of Discernment as we approach Election Day and ask for God’s guidance and blessings on our nation.
