Magnanimous Musings of Fr. John Robert Skeldon

Epiphany brings us to the highpoint of the Christmas season—yes we are still in Christmas— when Jesus is plainly revealed as King, as Son of God and as Man of Sorrows. What do I mean by these three terms? Let us set some context.

First, epiphany comes from two Greek words meaning to show and upon/on. We might say in English, to show forth or…to reveal…to make manifest. Epiphany is manifestation or showing forth. So God in Jesus is showing forth himself… manifesting himself…to the world in a singular and profound way.

As King…. What do the mysterious magi of the east bring to the infant Jesus? Gold. Gold is a precious metal indicat-ing kindicat-ingship, royalty. Indeed, the first readindicat-ing from Isaiah 60 mentions it. Jesus is kindicat-ing, but not kindicat-ing in a way you or I would ever imagine. He is king who reigns from his cross-throne. That’s when the full manifestation will occur: on the cross. “The crib lies always in the shadow of the cross,” as Fr. Raymond Brown would always say.

As God…. What do the mysterious magi of the east bring to the infant Jesus? Incense. Frankincense is an aromatic spice burned to please the gods or, in this case, God. It indicates divinity. Also, the first reading from Isaiah mentions it. Jesus is God, but in a way that is beyond human imagining. He comes as God in our flesh, as one of his creatures. He is God who will offer himself for his beloved people, just as incense is offered to God in worship.

As Man of Sorrows. What do the mysterious magi of the east bring to the infant Jesus? Myrrh. Myrrh is a spice used in the preparation of bodies for burial in the ancient near East. It indicates death. It is not mentioned in the reading from Isaiah. Jesus is King and God who will die on behalf of his people, for the sake of humanity. He will become the Suffering Servant out of love for us all. In dying upon the cross, he manifests himself fully as the God who loves us to the end.

What does this mean for us? If God so loved us…to the end…so ought we to love one another. If God has so manifest-ed himself to the world, so ought we to show that love to each other. Perhaps, some of you have read the famous novel of Victor Hugo, Les Miserables, or have seen the musical based on it (or even one of the movies based on the book or the movie based on the musical). The fundamental message of it is redemption through incarnational love, love in the flesh. Jean Val Jean becomes one who offers himself to the end because of transforming love in his life. He then promises that fidelity of love to Fantine and shows it to her daughter Cossette throughout her life. His opposite is Javier, stuck in his hell of bitterness born of

self-righteousness. This eventually leads to his taking of his life, because he cannot abide a world in which Jean Val Jean exists to show such selfless love.

In the musical, after Jean Val Jean has died and is led into Paradise, he sings the words “to love another person is to see the face of God.” There is perhaps no better language to describe the mystery of Christmas, Incarnation and Epiphany. As John 3:16 puts it: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that whoever believes in him may not perish but may have eternal life.” God so loved us human beings that he became one of us to show us the way to himself. If God has so manifested himself to us, so we ought to do to each other. In the manner that we love another person, the face of God is manifested to us…we see the face of God. And this is Epiphany. A Blessed and Magnanimous Christmas and Epiphany to you and a Happy New Year 2015!
