Sea lions are mammals, at home in the ocean. They are great

swimmers, with sleek bodies, strong fl ippers, and sharp teeth, perfect for catching food underwater. They are born on land and often sleep and play on shore. Sea lions are no longer in danger from hunters, but oil and garbage in oceans can still hurt them.

Build Background

Help students use their knowledge of marine mammals to visualize the book. Build interest by asking a question such as the following: ¿Qué saben acerca de las focas y los leones marinos? Read the title and author and talk about the cover photo.

Introduce the Text

Guide students through the text, noting important ideas and nonfi ction features. Help with unfamiliar language so they can read the text successfully. Give special attention to target vocabulary. Here are some suggestions:

Page 3: Explain that sea lions are noisy, playful animals that people like to watch. Suggested language: Vayan a la página 3. Según la leyenda, ¿dónde pueden

Page 5: Have students look at the photo and read the labels. ¿Cómo los ayudan los

Choices for Further Support

• Fluency Invite students to choose a passage from the text to read aloud. Remind them to use rising and falling tones in a way that is related to the meaning and punctuation of the text.

• Comprehension Based on your observations of the students’ reading and discussion, revisit parts of the text to clarify or extend comprehension. Remind students to go back to the text to support their ideas.

• Phonics/Word Work Provide practice as needed with words and word parts, using examples from the text. Remind students how to work fl exibly with base words, taking apart and making new words by adding prefi xes and suffi xes. Practice with words from the text, such as jugar/juguetones. Have children think of other base words that can be changed by adding a suffi x.

Responding

Have students complete the vocabulary activities on page 11. Remind them to answer the Word Teaser on p. 12. (Answer: a bordo)

Reading Nonfi ction

Nonfiction Features: Labels and Section Headings Remind students that nonfi ction has

many features to help readers fi nd and understand important information. Labels and section headings are two of these features. Explain that the labels on the photo on page 5 help readers understand the names that are used for body parts of a sea lion. Labels offer a quick and clear way to get information from a book.

Section headings are another important source of information. By reading the section headings in a nonfi ction book, the reader can preview the book before reading the main text. Have students read the section heading on page 6. Ask what information they expect to learn in this section (cómo distinguir entre un león marino y una foca). Then have students choose another section heading in the book and ask them to tell what they expect that section will be about.

Writing Prompt: Thinking Beyond the Text

Have students write a response to the prompt on page 6.
