the university of Santiago de compostela Hall of residence (Sur) is a consolidated service whose seal of quality and guarantee is the satisfaction of our users. the location, the fa- cilities available and other additional services we offer (cafeterias, dining rooms, libraries, computer rooms with internet access... ) are all good examples of the institution’s willing- ness to consolidate the Sur as a quality service for the benefit of the entire university community.

the vice-chancellor’s office responsible for the university community and Social com- mitment deals with the organisation and management of the Sur, which is made up of three Students’ Halls of residence (Hr) and two university residences (ur) located in the Santiago de compostela campus and one university residence in the Lugo campus.

their objective is to provide accommodation and comprehensive training to those members of the university community who request these services – as well as to those who participate in these activities. to this respect, various cultural events are organized in each of the Sur centres.

With regard to students, accessing this service depends on the academic qualifica- tions they achieve and their income and pay- ment depends solely on the personal income available to them. consequently, the users of this service may not only be those students with higher incomes, but also those with lower incomes, although the amount they pay for the accommodation will be proportional to their purchasing power. to this respect, the university has established a system of quotas for the lowest incomes, so that all of the services will be available to everyone, on equal terms. the objective is to compensate any differences in opportunities on account of financial reasons, aiming to reward the academic efforts of each potential user.

Similarly, every year the vice-chancellor’s of- fice responsible for the university community and Social commitment organises collabora- tion scholarships in order to develop activities in the residences and Halls, which include financial support and free accommodation, grouped under the following themes: environ- ment, Library, Social/cultural activities, Sports and computer activities.

For further information, contact the Section of Services to the university community, at the Student aids and Services unit of the vice- rectorship of university community and Social commitment, which is managed by the Sur.

CLeMente

the Hr “San clemente” is the second build- ing from the Project by the architect Jenaro de la Fuente álvarez. it was finished in the year 1942 and perpetuates the tradition of the “clementina”, which dates back to the 16th century, when archbishop Juan de San clemente founded the college, located in the building occupied today by the “rosalía de castro” Secondary School. the present-day Halls of residence therefore combine anti- quated splendour with modern facilities and a privileged location, given that it is located in the campus vida and near the city centre.

the present-day building of the residence occupies part of the complex known as “Burgo das nacións”, which was a provisional build- ing constructed in 1965 to provide accommo- dation for pilgrims travelling to compostela during that Jubilee Year.

When the 1965 Holy Year ended, the ensemble of modules which made up the complex, built using light and temporary materials, fulfilled other shortcomings and was used to house other institutions, which required more solid facilities: it was a Postgraduate residence, lecture rooms for various graduate speciali- ties, headquarters of the university printing

in 1979 the uSc started using Burgo das nacións as a mixed university residence.

during the academic year 1986-87, the construction of the present-day building was started, and it was finished in the year 1992-93.

the residence is located in the north campus, approximately 500 metres from the centre of the old town.
