Dear Brothers and Sisters:

When I was a teenager growing up in Beacon, NY, there was a prison chaplain residing in our parish rectory. His ministry brought him into daily contact with hard-ened criminals. I still remember one homily he gave on the Feast of Corpus Christi. He told of the day he was making his rounds to bring communion to the Catholic inmates. On his list was a man who was living in soli-tary confinement. Because of the gravity of his crimes he was considered to be too dan-gerous to live among the larger prison popu-lation.

When the chaplain arrived at his cell, he had to get down on his knees to give the man communion through a slot at the bot-tom of the door where a plate of food was passed three times daily. As he placed our Lord into the inmate’s waiting fingers, he heard weeping from the other side. “What’s wrong?” asked the priest, “Why you are cry-ing?” He was not prepared for the response that came. “He died the death of a criminal, although innocent, in order to save me. Now he lowers himself once again in order to save me!”

I can’t tell you how many times that homily has come to mind when reflecting on the gift of the Eucharist. I am, we are, that prisoner, not one of us is worthy of the tre-mendous self-sacrificing love of Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament. It is a pure gift which keeps on giving at every Mass throughout the world. It is only fitting that this solemn festival should be held to thank him for his abiding love lowered to reach us all.

Love and Prayers,

Notas del Pastor

Queridos hermanos,
