L

T
he ballet companies of greatest worldwide relevance come to ahalt this spring in the Campoamor Theatre, with the 2012 Oviedo Dance Festival, presenting a unique repertoire through which the public will be able to appreciate the history of dance from our times to the splendour of the great romantic ballets.
Almost halfway through the festival, the appointment with great classical dance will be next 4th and 5th May and offered by one of the essential schools of this discipline, that from Russia, with one of the State companies, the Kremlin ballet which, directed by Andréi Petrov, will offer two sessions on consecutive days: “Giselle”, one of the great romantic ballets, and “Figaro”, created by Petrov himself with music from operas by Mozart and Rossini.
The national panorama is represented by the Ballet of Víctor Ullate from the Community of Madrid, which will visit this city next 7th May to present “Samsara”, a creation by Ullate himself, with which he intends to take the spectator to those places from where the diverse repertoire of ethnic music making up this ballet originate. However, one of the most awaited representations is that to arrive from Switzerland, performed by the Ballet of Zurich, one of the most important in Europe and whose show has been unanimously hailed by international critics and has achieved an extraordinary success in its presentation in the Royal Theatre of Madrid.
On 11th May, the ballet company will bring pleasure to the public in Oviedo with a creation by Heinz Spoerli, “In den winden im nichts”. The creativity and work capacity of this great choreographer, or “dance manufacturer” as he prefers to define himself, become obvious with “In the wind, in nothing”, one of his strictest and most poetic pieces of work, built with the music of the suites for violoncello by Bach, to be performed by Claudius Hermann, solo violoncello of the Orchestra of the Opera of Zurich.
The end of the Festival, next 13th June, will have The Ballets of Monte Carlo representing Cinderella as the leading role, with music by Prokofiev and choreography by the director of the company, Jean Christophe Maillot, playing with that which is fantastic and that which is natural to present a vital Cinderella, going beyond a simple fairytale character. ■

La Ascensión y el
Martes de Campo, dos
fiestas propia
O
Two Fiestas of its Own, La
Ascensión and Martes de
Campo
O
viedo embellishes itself in the month of May to becomethe capital of Asturias and all Asturians like never before, with the celebration of two fiestas that are its own. The Fair of La Ascensión, next 18th, 19th and 20th May is the meeting point and one for tribute to the men of the Asturian fields, even having its own typical menu: Vegetable stew of the season, Asturian-style beef in white wine sauce and cherry pie.
In the city, several scenarios represent the most prominent features of the Fair with all their intensity: “La Losa”, where the artisans of the most varied trades show their ancient art; the Old Quarters, where the Mercau Astur (Asturian market) is held, the Cathedral square, full of merchants offering a wide variety of handcrafted products; and the Ferial de Llanera, this being the scenario for the actual Cattle Market.
The Folkloric Festival gives a sample of the richness and variety of Asturian music, with over one thousand bagpipers and dancers parading down the streets of Oviedo cheering up its squares interpreting traditional dances. The other seasonal fiesta is the Fiesta de la Balesquida or “Martes de Campo”, held on the first Tuesday after Whit Sunday; this year, next 29th May.
Being a bank holiday in the city, this celebration is a tradition that comes from a pilgrimage and is in honour of Nuestra Señora de la Esperanza de la Cofradía de La Balesquida (Our Lady of Hope of the Brotherhood of La Balesquida), the oldest in Spain. The fiesta goes back to the 13th century to celebrate the donation performed by Balesquita Giraldez to the guild of tailors of Oviedo. It starts with the announcement by the Herald, dressed in the old style and riding a white horse.
During the “Martes de Campo” or “Martes del Bollo” (Field Tuesday or Bread Tuesday), the citizens of Oviedo meet in the Park of San Francisco to celebrate this fiesta with “bollo preñao” (a piece of bread filled with chorizo or bacon), wine and other gastronomic delights from the fields. ■
