Message from the Pastor

The gospel passage this week contains two well-defined parts, both rich in teaching. In the first, Jesus warns us about the very human temptation of looking for our own glory and becoming slaves of vanity.

Jesus’ lesson is clear and carries a serious warning against that very natural tendency that leads us to raise altars to our own selves instead of surrendering only to the one true God. Christ, not our own ego, must be the center of our life. The ego leads us away from the true Christian dimension of love.

In the second part of the gospel Christ presents the example of the poor widow, who in spite of her want gives generously what little she has and thus obtains God’s approval.

Today we are encouraged by the example of this poor widow which shows us the great value that small things have for God. The One who sees the intention behind the gift rather than the material object being given will also value the merit of our act of giving. Let us give lovingly, generously and sacrificially and we will lack for nothing in this life or in eternity.

Mensaje del Párroco

El pasaje del evangelio de este fin de semana contiene dos partes bien diferenciadas, ambas ricas en enseñanza. En la primera Jesús nos previene por la tentación, tan humana, de buscar nuestra propia gloria, convirtiéndonos en esclavos de la vanidad.

La lección de Jesús es clara y encierra una seria advertencia contra esa tendencia natural que nos domina a veces de buscarnos a nosotros mismos, de levantarnos altares, en lugar de rendirnos únicamente ante el verdadero Dios. Cristo tiene que ser el centro de nuestra vida y no nuestro yo, que nos aparta de la verdadera dimensión cristiana del amor.

En la segunda parte del evangelio Cristo nos presenta el ejemplo de una viuda pobre, que a pesar de su indigencia, da con generosidad lo poco que tiene y merece así la aprobación de Dios.

Hoy debemos sentir el estímulo que brota del ejemplo de la viuda pobre que nos dice que las cosas pequeñas son de inmenso valor para Dios. Quien sabe ver la intención del don y no el objeto material que se da, sabrá valorar también el mérito de nuestro gesto al dar. Demos con amor, con generosidad, con sacrificio y nada nos ha de faltar, en esta vida y en la eterna.

Saint of the Week | Santo de la Semana

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini

Born: July 15th, 1850 Lombardy, Italy

Die:December 22, 1917 Chicago, Illinois, US

Festivity: November 13th

St. Frances was a nun who always dreamt of

going to China as a missionary. However, when

she was old enough to join the convent, they

told her that she couldn’t be a nun because of

her health. Regardless of her impossibilities, she

found the order of the Missionaries of the

Sacred Heart with the purpose of giving

Christian education to girls.

She was so successful that she built seven institutions with few resources.

Also, the Pope sent her to America instead of her beloved China because

the pontiff was worried about the situation of the Italian Immigrants in

the US because they lived in poor neighborhood and their families had

difficult jobs. At the end of her life St. Frances founded sixty-seven

institutions such as, orphanage, schools and hospitals around the world.

Santa Francisca Xavier Cabrini

Nació: 15 de julio de 1850 Lombardía, Italia.

Santa Francisca era una monja que siempre soñó con ir a China como

misionera. Sin embargo, cuando tenía la edad

suficiente para unirse al convento, le dijeron que

no podía ser monja debido a su salud. A pesar de

sus imposibilidades, fundó el orden de las

Misioneras del Sagrado Corazón con el propósito

de brindar educación cristiana a las niñas.

Tuvo tanto éxito que construyó siete

instituciones con pocos recursos. Además, el Papa

la envió a Estados Unidos en lugar de a su amada

China porque el pontífice estaba preocupado por

la situación de los inmigrantes italianos en los

Estados Unidos porque vivían en barrios pobres y

sus familias tenían trabajos difíciles. Al final de su

vida, St. Francisca fundó sesenta y siete

institucio-nes como orfanatos, escuelas y hospitales de todo

el mundo.

THE CALL TO DISCIPLESHIP | LLAMADOS A SER DISCÍPULOS

The core vocation in the Gospel of Mark is the vocation, or call, to

discipleship. Today’s Gospel passage provides us with one last

example of what the vocation to discipleship means, and one

example of what it doesn’t mean. A destitute widow shows us that

discipleship means following Jesus’ way of service, even if it

requires giving one’s livelihood (or life). The scribes show us by

their bad example that discipleship should entail a vocation to

extend God’s care to those who are most in need. In our reading

from the book of Kings another widow and her son are close to

death. They too give what little they have, but they are rewarded by

Elijah with food enough for a year. And the reading from the Letter

to the Hebrews reminds us that Jesus sacrificed his life “to bring

salvation to those who eagerly await him” (Hebrews 9:28).

La vocación central en el Evangelio según san Marcos es la

vocación, o el llamado de ser discípulos. El pasaje del Evangelio de

hoy nos brinda por lo menos un ejemplo de qué significa la

voca-ción de ser discípulo y un ejemplo de lo que no significa. Una viuda

pobre nos muestra que ser un buen discípulo significa seguir el

camino de servicio de Jesús, incluso si implica entregar todo lo que

tenemos para vivir (o incluso nuestra vida). Los letrados nos

muestran con su mal ejemplo que ser un buen discípulo implica la

vocación de hacer llegar el cuidado de Dios a los más necesitados.

En nuestra lectura del libro de los Reyes otra viuda y su hijo corren

peligro de morir. Ellos también entregan lo poco que tienen, pero

son recompensados por Elías con comida suficiente para un año. Y

la lectura de la carta a los hebreos nos recuerda que Jesús sacrificó

su vida “para salvación de aquellos que lo aguardan” (Hebreos

9:28).
