THE WAY

Today we sense the apostles' trepidation as they begin to realize that the Lord would soon be leaving them. In their fear, they ask, "Master, we do not know where you are going; how can we know the way?" (John 14:5). Jesus tells them that he is the way. The Easter season has been a time of growing in Easter faith so that we, too, may learn to know that Je-sus is the way. We can take comfort in the Lord's promise that he is going to his Father's house to prepare a place for us, his chosen people who have been called out of darkness into God's wonderful light. As the paschal candle continues to burn during this holy season, let us re-member that in baptism we were given the light of Christ. With Christ our light as the beacon lighting our way, let us march toward the glory of Pentecost. (c) Copyright, J. S. Paluch Co.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In many parish churches, more rarely in monastery churches and cathedrals, the tabernacle with the Blessed Sacrament is visible from a doorway or aisle in the church. Normally, a person is to give the proper sign of reverence, a genuflection, when passing in proximity to the taber-nacle. The word "genuflect" comes from Latin roots meaning bending (or flexing) the knee. A common-sense exception to the rule is for a sacristan who is taking care of the church and can't be genu-flecting every thirty seconds during a vacuum run. Also excepted are persons in procession entrusted with important symbols of the Lord's presence. So, a crossbearer or a minister carrying the Gospel book, or ministers on their way to their Communion stations do not gen-uflect. For everyone else, the usual sign of reverence for the Lord's presence in the Blessed Sacrament is to genuflect on the right knee.

The oldest form of reverence during prayer in our tradition is standing; kneeling or genu-flecting is a sign borrowed from old civic practice. The posture of kneeling, even on one knee, is a sign of submission. Servants would take this position before their masters in the ancient world. It said: I'm not running away, I'm yours, I'm here for you. This is what your genuflection says when you enter a Catholic church where the place of reserva-tion of the Blessed Sacrament is visible to you: I'm yours.

Pray the Rosary for Peace

In his remarks to pilgrims and tourists gathered in St. Peter’s Square to pray the Regina coeli with him on the Fourth Sunday of Easter, the Holy Father said, “[I]n this month of May, let us pray the Rosary in particular for peace.” “Please!” he said, “let us pray the Rosary for peace, as the Virgin of Fatima asked us to do.”

Pope Francis is scheduled to travel to Fatima, in Portugal, this weekend, to lead celebrations marking the 100th anniversary of the apparitions of Our Blessed Lady there —Vatican Radio

CENTENNIAL OF OUR LADY OF FATIMA APPARITIONS 1917-2017 Prayer for Peace

O God, All-Holy Father, who gave us Your peace through Jesus and through Him you wished to lead us to Your Heart

– in this place where the Virgin Mary invites us to pray for peace in the world and where the Angel of Peace exhorts us to adore God alone –, grant us, we pray, that peace may reign among all peoples; that the leaders of the nations find ways towards justice, that we may all reach the peace of heart and that, through the inter-cession of the Queen of Peace, we may become builders of a more fraternal world. Through Christ, Our Lord. Amen.

(Juan 14:5).

Oh Dios, Santo Padre, que nos dio Tu paz por medio de Jesús Y por medio de Él tu querías conducirnos a tu Corazón - en este lugar donde la Virgen María nos invita a orar por la paz en el mundo y donde el Ángel de la Paz nos exhorta a adorar solo a Dios -, concédenos, pedimos, que la paz reine entre todos los pueblos;

Fatima Jubilee Prayer of Consecration

Hail, Mother of the Lord,

Virgin Mary, Queen of the Rosary of Fatima! Blessed among all women,

you are the image of the Church dressed in the Paschal light,

you are the honour of our people,

you are the triumph over the mark of evil. Prophecy of the merciful Love of the Father, Teacher of the Annunciation of the Good News of the Son,

Sign of the burning Fire of the Holy Spirit, teach us, in this valley of joys and sorrows,

the eternal truths that the Father reveals to the little ones. Show us the strength of your mantle of protection. In your Immaculate Heart,

be the refuge of sinners and the way that leads to God. In unity with my brethren, In Faith, Hope and Love, I surrender myself to you.

In unity with my brethren, through you, I consecrate myself to God, O Virgin of the Rosary of Fatima.

And thus surrounded by the Light that comes from your hands, I will give Glory to the Lord for ever and ever. Amen.
