LETTER FROM THE PASTOR

How often do you think of Jesus as a divider? Many times, we think of him as the Good Shephard laying down his life for his sheep and gathering his sheep together. It is exceedingly rare that we think of him as the great divider. However, listen to what he says in the gospel, “Do you think that I have come to establish peace on the earth? No, I tell you, but rather division.” What is this about?

The short answer is this if we truly follow Jesus there will be opposition. To follow Jesus is to live a life of holiness that is counter cultural. Look at the second reading from the letter to the Hebrews. It is the part of the letter that is encouraging us and the early Christians to persevere in the faith just as Christ persevered in his mission to save us from sin and death by dying on the cross. The letter is clear, “let us rid ourselves of every burden and sin that clings to us...”

To live a sinless life is at the heart of what it is to be a Christian, and it is not easy, and it is the source of much division. This is where Christ bring both peace and division if you look at it carefully. For the believer there is peace in knowing and loving Jesus and following him in our daily life. But there are many who still do not know him, love him, or adore him. There are some who are plain out against Jesus.

This is the source of the division we have a choice to make, one that has eternal consequences. This choice is then further divided into more choices starting with are we going to choose to believe that Jesus Christ is the Eternal Son of God who became incarnate for us, and for our salvation? There are many in the world who do not believe this or will not even investigate it. If one believes this next there is the choice to be his follower, to submit your will to his will, he is God after all. This is hard because we want to do what we want and not what anyone else wants us to do, let alone God. Then do we choose to proclaim him to the world?

This is where it all comes together. Faith and belief remain just quaint ideas in the head unless acted upon. When we act on our faith and speak about Jesus, sure some people will support us. Others may think we are strange, and still others will intentionally seek to make our lives difficult. Quite frankly, who likes difficulty in life? However, this is where we must persevere in avoiding sin and proclaiming Christ by the way we live and speak.

The second reading concludes with these words encouraging in our fight against sin, “In your struggle against sin you have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood.” Meaning you are still here and alive. Unfortu- nately, we probably worry more about what people think about us than dying a martyr for love of God. This is the encouragement we need. We need to be able to not worry about what others think of us, but to say what needs to be said and to do the right thing. Imagine being in a conversation where things turn to gossip, what would it look like if we said, let's talk about something else? How much better would the world be if we truly struggled to not commit any sins, and to love God and neighbor as we witness to the love of Christ?

God Bless, Fr. Chris Reising
